A police constable attached to the Local Arms unit III was arrested on Tuesday at Worli by officials of the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) of the CBI for demanding a bribe of Rs 3,000 from an unemployed youth for getting him a job at the Naval Dockyard.
The unemployed youth, complainant in the case, had apparently come in touch with the arrested constable,Anil Desai,a few weeks ago. On learning that the youth was seeking a job,Desai told him that he had connections with the Naval Dockyard officials and could use his influence to procure a job for him. Desai demanded a bribe of Rs 3,000 from the complainant in consideration of procuring the job, sad an ACB official.
Suspecting foul play, the complainant approached the anti-corruption branch office and filed a complaint following which a trap was laid for Desai. On June 23,the complainant asked Desai to meet him at Worli for paying him the money. Accordingly,Desai agreed to meet him at the spot where he was arrested red-handed while accepting the money, said the official.
The official added that when Desais residence was searched, the anti-corruption sleuths found many other documents containing details of other youths, suggesting that Desai could have trapped many other unemployed youths with promises of government jobs for bribes. Desai shall be produced in court and after getting his custody, our enquiries will also focus on how many youths have been so far approached by Desai for such jobs procured after accepting bribes, he added.
