State govt issues notification for student union elections

After a week of announcing the restoration of students’ unions in the universities and colleges of the state,the government on Thursday issued notification for the election of students’ unions as per the recommendations of Lyngdoh committee from the next academic session.

Revival of defunct students’ unions was one of the promises made by Lyngdoh committee before the Assembly elections and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav had ordered the restoration of students’ unions the day he was sworn in.

A release from Information and Public Relations Department said that Higher Education Department secretary Avnish Kumar Awashthi informed that as per Lyngdoh Committee guidelines,the office bearers (of students’ unions) will be elected in a direct election by the students of colleges and universities.

The release stated that the elections should be held every year and if possible,between six to eight weeks of the beginning of the new academic session. For contesting the elections,the undergraduate students should be between the age of 17 to 22 years,post-graduate students should be between the age of 24 to 25 years,and the research students should be below the age of 28 years,it said.

According to the release,the candidates must have the minimum attendance fixed by the university or 75 per cent,whichever is higher. The candidates should not have any criminal record. They should not have been prosecuted or convicted in any court for a criminal case,and no disciplinary action should have been taken by the university or college against them.

The candidates should be the students of regular and full time courses and not of distance learning courses. Every candidate will be allowed to spend a maximum of Rs 5,000 as election expenditure failing which,his/her candidature will be cancelled,the release said.
