Two-yr-old found after two days

A two-year-old girl was found near a public telephone booth in Central Delhi’s Jhandewalan on Saturday evening, two days after she went missing on an evening out with her parents at the India Gate lawns.

A two-year-old girl was found near a public telephone booth in Central Delhi’s Jhandewalan on Saturday evening, two days after she went missing on an evening out with her parents at the India Gate lawns.

The child,Gungun, had gone missing on Thursday evening — she had gone to India Gate with father Vijay Singh, mother Shashi Singh and brother Ashu,9. According to police, the Singhs initially presumed that she would be somewhere on the sprawling lawns but failing to spot her till past 10 pm,they approached the Tilak Marg police and lodged a complaint.

An officer involved with the investigations said initial probe revealed three women, who sell balloons at the India Gate lawns, found a girl alone and took her from there. “We got a call from Jhandewalan area this morning saying that a girl, aged around two,has been found. A police team reached the spot and found Gungun.”

The officer said it was an anonymous call made to the Police Control Room. “The call was made from a PCO and we were told the girl is near the PCO booth,” the officer said. “The police team found her sitting just outside the PCO.”

The Tilak Marg police informed Gungun’s parents and handed her back to the couple.

According to the officer, the police are now trying to find out where the child was in the past couple of days. The officer said the police are trying to answer some “unanswered questions” now. “Who took her from India Gate? How did she reach Jhandewalan? Who changed her clothes, for she was found in a different dress,” he said.

Newsline could not contact the Joint Commissioner of Police and the Deputy Commissioner of Police of the New Delhi range for their comments on the episode despite repeated attempts.

Parents in seventh heaven
Gungun’s parents, meanwhile, thanked the media and the police for their “unconditional support” in tracing the child.

Her father Vijay Singh,a trader based in Dilshad Garden,Northeast Delhi, had a word of caution for other parents out with their children: “I can’t explain what we have been through in these past two days. We don’t want any parent to go through such anxiety,so I appeal everyone to be extra-vigilant while going out with children.”

The police said further investigations are on.
