The next time you wish to take the Delhi Metro but are confused about the route or the station, you can use the Google way to find out the entire route along with the stations marked on a map. Fancy a sandwich on the way to the Metro station? Google it again.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has tied up with Google India to provide Metro commuters with information on schedules, routes, station locations and train frequencies through Google Transit.
Google Transit – also available on mobile phones – will also provide information on locations of banks,ATMs and restaurants.
The vision of DMRC is to provide people-centred public transport systems, and this is a step forward in that direction, a Delhi Metro spokesperson said.
By logging on to Google Maps through PCs or mobile phones, commuters will simply have to enter the starting point and the destination. Google Transit will provide a map of the route and transit options available. This will include the location of the station, the Metro line and even the fare.
During the Commonwealth Games, there will be visitors who may not know how to use public transit services or where to avail basic utilities. They will now be able to get all this information at the click of a button, Manik Gupta,Product Manager,Google India, said. It is a passenger-friendly service and is free of cost. DMRC has shared its data with us,which we have put up on the web, Gupta added.
While the DMRC has three lines – red, blue and yellow – functioning so far,Gupta said that the system will be updated regularly as and when the Metro network expands.
While Google Transit, launched in October 2005,is already being used in New York,Chicago and Sidney, the company has already launched pilot projects for the Kolkata Metro,Hyderabad and Chennai.
Google Maps are already being used extensively to plan driving routes and locate places. We are expecting an increase in the number of mobile phone users for the new service, Gupta added.
