The maiden Chandigarh Marathon,a mega tourism sports event of Chandigarh Administration for the spirit of Chandigarh,will be held on January 31. It is being organised by the Department of Sports and supported by Department of Tourism. “Chandigarh Marathon has been enlisted as an annual feature of the Chandigarh Administration and is optimistic that Chandigarh with its beauty,broad flat roads,pleasant weather,pollution free environment and sporty culture will make the first marathon of Chandigarh as the best Marathon in the country,” said Ram Niwas,Home Secretary,Chandigarh. Bollywood celebrities like Kiran Kher,Gul Panag,along with renowned players from sports fraternity like Milkha Singh,Kapil Dev and other eminent personalities,will take part in the event. “We want every runner to feel special as their will be medal and certificate to each participant as they cross the finish line,” said ML Sharma,sports director,Chandigarh.

Delhi University register win
PATIALA: Buoyed by a fine performance by Varuni (seven goals),Delhi University outplayed MGKV,Varanasi 30-3 in a league match in North East Zone Inter University Handball Championship,at the Raja Bhalendra Singh Stadium on Wednesday. Tanisha and Neelam scored four goals for the winning team. In another match of the day,MJPRU,Bareilly scored a narrow 4-3 win over GGDU,Bilaspur,while HNBGU,Srinagar (UA) got a walkover from Lovely Professional University. In a one-sided affair,HPU,Shimla thrashed BRAU,Agra 16-1 . Priyanka scored seven goals for the winning team while Chandni scored six goals.

Punjab and Haryana register wins
Principal Accountant General Punjab and Principal AG Haryana advanced into semi-finals of the North Zone Accountant General Volleyball Tournament which commenced at the Sector 7 Sports Complex on Wednesday. Haryana easily defeated AG Jammu and Kashmir by 25-5,25-10,25-9 in 31 minutes. For the winners,Ajit,Gurtej and Sukhpal unleashed their powerful shots which the Jammu and Kashmir players failed to answer. In the second quarter-final match,Principal AG Punjab took 40 minutes to dispose of the challenge of Principal DAE and SM Delhi by 25-20,25-13,25-13. For Punjab Gagan,Baljit and Dalip excelled in their sizzling smashes. For Delhi,Sudershan was outstanding with his shots.

Paramveer upsets top seed Shrey
MOHALI: Shrey Gupta,the top seed,fell to Paramveer Bajwa of Punjab in quarter-finals of the boys’ Under-12 category in the ongoing The British AITA Total Tennis Talent Series played at The British School,Sector 70,on Wednesday. Paramveer ousted him in three well fought sets 4-6,6-3,6-3 that lasted for over two hours. Paramveer will now face Sunny Khadare of Maharashtra in the semifinals. Sunny got the walk over against Mayuk Rawat of Uttranchal. Third seed Nihit Rawal of Chandigarh outclassed Sabrang Sandal of Chandigarh 6-1,6-0,while Sumit Pal Singh had to fight for three sets before winning against Faisal Qumar of Rajasthan 4-6,6-2,6-3. In the boys’ U-14 age category,top seed Jotpal Singh of Punjab was upset by Faisal Qumar of Rajasthan 7-5,2-6,6-3. Shrey Gupta upset third seed Sumit Pal Singh of JK with ease in straight sets by 6-2,6-3,while Rahul Seth of Chandigarh got the better of Nihit Rawal of Chandigarh 6-3,0-6,6-2. In the girls’ U-12 category,Harsimran Kaur of Haryana,Shea Bhasin of Chandigarh,Neelanchal Gupta of Chandigarh,Shriya Kalia of HP,Rubani Ahluwalia of Chandigarh,Prinkle Singh of JK,Akshita Singh of Chandigarh and Nimrit Walia of Chandigarh booked their berth for the quarterfinals. Similarly,in the girls’ U-14 category,Harsimran Kaur of Haryana,Prinkle Singh of J&K,Mehakdep Kaur of Chandigarh,Joyana Thomas of Chandigarh,Shriya Kalia of HP,Rehmat Johal of Singapore,Ayna Arora of Chandigarh and Karishma Mehta of Chandigarh booked their place for the quarterfinals.

PU reach last four of AIU football tourney
Panjab University trounced Barkatulla University 5-2 to enter the semi-finals of the All India Inter-University Football Tournament for men being played at Coimbatore. The other teams to secure spot in the last four are Gurunanakdev University of Amritsar,Kerala University,Thiruvananthauram,and Punjabi University of Patiala. In closely fought quarterfinals,Kerala University prevailed over holders Mizoram 5-4,while Guru Nanak Dev got the better of Mumbai 4-3 via tie-breakers. At full-time,Kerala and Mizoram was level at 1-1,while Guru Nanak Dev and Mumbai were 0-0. In another match,Punjabi University defeated Kannur University 4-0.

Sri Lanka to play in U-19 cricket tourney
PANCHKULA: As many as 12 teams,including Sri Lanka,have confirmed their participation in the 2nd V Hanumantha Rao All India Under-19 National Cricket Championship to be held at Hyderabad from January 12 to 15. According to Amarjit Kumar,general secretary,Cricket Federation of India,all the matches will be played at LB International Cricket stadium and Amberpet Cricket stadium,Hyderabad. Chandigarh has been placed in Pool C along with Tamil Nadu and Marathwara,while Haryana are in Pool D with Pondichery and Federation XI.

Modi College women judokas claim title
PATIALA: MM Modi College,Patiala won the Punjabi University Inter-College Judo Championship (Women) held at Punjabi University Campus. In the Judo (Women) competition,Modi College team secured second position. In the 48 Kg weight category,Varsha Rai claimed the top spot while Jyoti Sharma secured the top spot in the 52 kg category. In the 57 Kg category,Kamya Joshi won a silver medal. –
