Selfiee, a 2023 Hindi comedy-drama, marks a box-office disappointment despite its star-studded cast. Directed by Raj Mehta and produced by a consortium including Star Studios and Dharma Productions, the film features Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi in lead roles. A remake of the Malayalam film Driving Licence, Selfiee centers on the contentious relationship between a renowned actor and an RTO inspector. Production commenced in March 2022 following an official announcement the previous January. The film's theatrical release on February 24, 2023, however, failed to resonate with audiences. Critical reception was mixed, ultimately contributing to the film's poor performance at the box office. With worldwide earnings totaling a mere 23.63 crore (US$2.8 million), Selfiee stands as a significant commercial failure for its involved production houses and actors. The film's underperformance highlights the unpredictable nature of the Hindi film industry, even with established stars and a proven source material. The reasons behind its failure warrant further analysis of audience expectations and the film's execution.
The good thing about Selfiee is that it doesn't pretend to be more than it is. The bad thing about it is that it is not even trying.
An interesting premise offering an opportunity to talk about the transience of fame, the meaning of it in the time of social media, the nature of genuine stardom, the manipulation of media, the pitfalls of petty egos, and whether Big Bad Bollywood is really all that big or all that bad, is explored, but not really allowed to overshadow its larger-than-life hero Akshay Kumar himself.
Akshay even does a piece-to-camera at the start as himself, dedicating the film to the "fans". And while the fans have reciprocated the film industry's faith most recently in powering Pathaan to super-success, Selfiee is dishearteningly not as nice to its little man as it is to its big guy.
