With winters almost knocking the doors, the pollution levels in Delhi crossed permissible levels and people in the city woke up to a thick blanket of haze and reduced visibility on November 7. While Delhiites are probably having a tough time trying to find their way through the thick smog, Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi Chief Minister, described Delhi as a “gas chamber“. He attributed the dangerously risen pollution to the burning of crops in states like Haryana and Punjab. And, just like how every debate in and about the country shifts to the Internet these days, the hashtag #smog began trending on Twitter. While many condemned the carelessness of people who celebrated Diwali this year, others sneaked in a joke or two on the micro-blogging site.
“Do you smoke? NO, I live in Delhi,” “Who was celebrating Guy Fawkes day in Delhi?” “Right now you will feel like john cena if you are in delhi,” “Today everyone in Delhi can ask each other ‘jaanta hai mera baap kaun hai’ as person standing in front of them isn’t visible,” “Mr India doesn’t need his watch in Delhi. No one can see anything anyway,” were some of the top light-heated reactions to the #DelhiSmog on social media.
