On the first day of his libel case against former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi in London8217;s High Court, former New Zealand all-rounder Chris Cairns was questioned over large sums of money he received from a diamond trading company. Modi8217;s counsel Roger Thwaites queried Cairns as to his financial situation in 2008 and in particular his work for Vijay Dimon.

Cairns confirmed he received around 900,000 Emirati Dirham 245,000 in three separate payments over the course of 2008 and 2009. However, while claiming he had not signed any contract and it was only a verbal agreement to do promotional and sales work,Cairns accepted he had no previous experience in the diamond industry. The initial payment,of more than 350,000 Emirati Dirham was for relocation costs,Cairns said, the rest being for appearances at dinners and events.

Cairns also refuted allegations he was involved in match-fixing during his stint in the now defunct Indian Cricket League. On January 5,2010,Modi had tweeted that Cairns had been removed from the IPL auction list because of his involvement with match-fixing,prompting Cairns to file for libel. Cairns, captain of Chandigarh Lions in the rebel T20 league, had his contract terminated in October 2008.

Thwaites has also included six Indian players as witnesses to testify against Cairns. All six are his former Chandigarh Lions team mates Rajesh Sharma,TP Singh,Love Ablish,Gaurav Gupta,Amit Uniyal and Karanveer Singh. Former South Africa all-rounder Andrew Hall is also scheduled to be called as a witness for Modi.

Uniyal, however, was uncertain of deposing. I had clearly told Modis lawyers that people were talking about match-fixing,but how could I take someone8217;s name when I dont have any proof about it.8221; he told The Indian Express. Gupta and Karanveer said they had not decided whether to appear as witnesses while TP Singh,Sharma and Abilish were unavailable for comments.
