Kashmir reported widespread light snowfall on Sunday even as rain lashed the plains, marking the beginning of Chillai Kalan, the valley’s harsh 40-day winter phase.
The first major snow of the season led to the closure of several key routes, including the Srinagar–Leh highway (Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri Road) and the Mughal Road, and caused the cancellation of multiple flights at Srinagar International Airport. “The system is weakening and there is a possibility that the intensity of rain and snow will gradually come down,” Mukhtar Ahmad, director of the Meteorological Centre in Srinagar, told The Indian Express. “There is some possibility that some plains of north Kashmir as well may receive snowfall,” he added.
As the Valley turned into a winter wonderland like every year, several videos capturing breathtaking sights from Gulmarg and other areas emerged on the Internet. According to officials, the popular tourist destination in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district recorded around two inches of snowfall. Snow was also seen in Sonamarg along the Srinagar-Kargil highway, where it continued for hours in the morning.
