Voter turnout at 2 phases: According to the Maharashtra State Election Commission, the first phase of this election saw 67.63 per cent voter turnout and multiple instances of violence across the state on the polling day (December 2). Though the SEC had originally announced polling in 246 municipal councils and 42 municipal panchayats in the first phase, voting was postponed in some places and was held only in 222 municipal councils and 42 panchayats on December 2. The second phase of the polls, held on December 20, recorded a voter turnout of 47.04 per cent till the afternoon. This phase covered elections to the remaining 24 municipal councils and nagar panchayats, along with 154 wards in 76 other local bodies.
Political equations: The elections have seen the split of existing alliances and the formation of new ones. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and the Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena aggressively campaigned throughout the elections, many a time against each other. The two warring factions of the NCP–one led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and the other by party founder Sharad Pawar–have joined forces in Kolhapur. In a few other places, factions of the Congress have joined hands with the BJP.
