‘Bengal unsafe under Mamata, going down path of fundamentalism like Bangladesh,’ says BJP Minority Morcha chief

After a Hindu man was lynched in the violence that broke out in Bangladesh following youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi’s death, BJP Minority Morcha president Jamal Siddiqui sought support for the minority Hindus there.

Comparing the situation in West Bengal with the simmering tension and events surrounding anti-India protests in Bangladesh, the BJP on Monday attacked Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and accused her of “promoting fundamentalism” for the sake of vote-bank politics.

While expressing solidarity with members of the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh and Pakistan, BJP Minority Morcha president Jamal Siddiqui accused Banerjee of being “no less than an ISIS leader” from whom the BJP would “liberate” the state.

“Under Mamata Banerjee’s leadership, West Bengal is going down the same path as Bangladesh, if this is allowed to continue, West Bengal will not remain safe,” Siddiqui alleged.

On Friday, Bangladesh erupted in violence as youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi died at a Singapore hospital days after he was shot, triggering large-scale arson and attacks on media outlets. A Hindu man was lynched in the violence, raising questions over the safety of minorities in the neighbouring country.

Siddiqui also issued an appeal to the secular and Islamic communities in Bangladesh to stand by the minority Hindus and ensure security as well as justice for them.

Adding that the Muslim minority in India enjoyed complete equality with the Hindu majority, and expected the same in the neighbouring country, he expressed regret at Bangladesh “becoming like Syria and other fundamentalist countries”.

Attacking Banerjee, Siddiqui said, “Her ideology is fundamentalist and she promotes it so she can use the vote bank she has created… We will not let West Bengal become Bangladesh. In the 2026 elections, the people of Bengal will liberate it from Mamata didi.”
