Pope Francis has urged the international community to examine whether Israel’s military offensive in Gaza amounts to genocide, marking his strongest critique yet of Tel Aviv’s actions in the ongoing conflict.
In excerpts from his forthcoming book published by La Stampa on Sunday, the Pope referenced expert opinions, stating, “What is happening in Gaza has the characteristics of a genocide.” He added, “We should investigate carefully to assess whether this fits into the technical definition formulated by international jurists and organizations.”
The Israeli foreign ministry has not commented on the Pope’s remarks. However, Israel has consistently denied accusations of genocide.
As the leader of the 1.4-billion-member Catholic Church, Pope Francis often avoids taking sides in international conflicts, focusing instead on promoting peace and de-escalation. However, his recent remarks signal increasing criticism of Israel’s conduct.
In September, the Pope condemned the deaths of Palestinian children in Gaza and described Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon as “beyond morality.” Although he has refrained from publicly labeling the Gaza conflict as genocide before, he was previously entangled in controversy after meeting with Palestinian representatives who claimed he used the term in private. The Vatican later denied the assertion.
The Vatican has not officially commented on the latest remarks but acknowledged the book excerpts, including the Pope’s statement on genocide, on its news website.
Last week, Pope Francis had met with former hostages held by Hamas in Gaza, who are campaigning for the release of others still detained.
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is currently examining a case filed by South Africa in December, accusing Israel of violating the Genocide Convention. In January, the ICJ directed Israel to ensure its military does not commit genocidal acts. However, the court has yet to issue a verdict on whether genocide has occurred in Gaza.
