Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday said the 8% GDP growth recorded in the second quarter shows the new momentum in India’s economy and signals the country’s growing role as a global growth driver.
Speaking at the HT Leadership Summit, Modi said, “Just a few days ago, India’s GDP figures for Quarter 2 were released. The growth rate of 8% is a reflection of the new momentum of our progress. This is not just a number but it’s a strong macroeconomic signal. They convey that India is rising as a key growth driver of the global economy today.”
Global growth is around 3%, while G7 economies are growing at an average of about 1.5 per cent, he added.
“At such a time, India is a model of high growth and low inflation,” Modi said.
There was a time when people, especially economists in our country, used to express concern over high inflation but the same people now talk of inflation being low, he said in his address. India’s achievements are not ordinary, it is not about numbers but about fundamental change brought about in the last decade, Modi asserted.
Reforms and the performance of today are paving the way for the transformation of tomorrow, he said, adding that a large part of India’s potential remained untapped for a long time.
“When this untapped potential gets more opportunities, when it can contribute to the nation’s development with full energy and without obstacles, the transformation of the country becomes inevitable. Our Eastern India, our Northeast, our villages, our Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, the women power of our country, India’s innovative youth power, our maritime strength, the Blue Economy, India’s space sector, there is so much whose full potential was never utilised in the previous decades.”
Modi gave the example of start-up Skyroot to highlight how space sector reforms opened doors for young innovators.
The PM also said said India’s self-confidence “had been shaken by the mentality of colonialism but now we are moving ahead of it. At a time when the world is full of uncertainties, India is in a different league.”
“Right now, one-fourth of the 21st century has passed. The world has seen many ups and downs including financial crises, global pandemic, technological disruptions, world falling apart, we are seeing wars, these situations in one way or the other are challenging the world,” PM Modi said.
“India is full of self confidence. When there is talk of slowdown, India writes the story of growth. When there is trust deficit in the world, India is becoming a pillar of trust, when the world is moving towards fragmentation, India is becoming a bridge builder,” PM Modi said.
