‘This saree is worth kidneys’: Girija Oak shows off 400-saree collection with a lakh-worth Banarasi and vintage drapes

She first displayed her grandmother’s saree, which dates back to the 1960s–70s. She said, “It is hand painted chiffon saree.” The cream-coloured saree looked regal. She then showcased the most expensive saree in her collection — a Banarasi Jamawar saree from Raw Mango. She said, “This is my favourite saree. Thodi mehengi saree hai. This saree is worth a few kidneys. It falls within a lakh and more range. I only have one raw mango saree, I can’t afford more sarees from them. But is a very pretty colour.”

Speaking about sarees as an investment and whether it is a good idea, she added, “If you keep sarees nicely, their life is forever. Saree can fit any size, it is very versatile.”

Girija went on to display several other sarees, including leheriya, block-printed pieces, kalamkari sarees, and a traditional Maharashtrian Paithani. She also showed a pure georgette leheriya saree that came in a tiny box. She said, “This is pure georgette leheriya saree which came in a tiny box. I bought it from Gujarat.”

She showed another saree that she had block-printed herself. She said, “It is uneven because I have block printed it myself but it is special.” Girija also flaunted an eye-catching saree featuring an Audrey Hepburn print.

Girija Oak is a Marathi and Hindi actor. Although she has been active since 2004, she gained renewed attention after her praised performance in the short film Quarter (2020), directed by Navjyot Bandiwadekar. She has also appeared in Bollywood films such as Aamir Khan’s Taare Zameen Par (2007) and Krishna D K’s Shor in the City (2010). More recently, Girija appeared in the Shah Rukh Khan-led Jawan (2023) and the Netflix film Inspector Zende (2025), starring Manoj Bajpayee.
