Elephants are known for their strong kinship and maternal ties, especially when it comes to protecting their offspring. Many videos and pictures of elephant herds coming together to protect younger elephants often go viral. Now another such video is winning hearts all over the country.
On Wednesday, Indian Forest Services officer Susanta Nanda shared a video that showed a herd of jumbos quickly coming together to cover their young ones sensing an impending lion attack.
While sharing a clip, Nanda wrote, “On seeing the lion, elephants form a circle around the young calves for protecting the young baby. In wild, no animal does it better than elephant herd.”

This video has quickly gathered thousands of likes. Commenting on it, a Twitter user wrote, “Wow, natural instinct on full display! Absolutely amazing – each elephant knew what it had to do. The little ones came to the centre while the bigger ones formed a circle!”.
Another person observed, “Best benchmark for “Groups”. Humans can learn. Gentle, quiet creatures otherwise. Going about their business. “Grouping” to protect; not to go about creating proactive mayhem and mischief.”
In July 2021, Indian Administrative Officer Supriya Sahu shared a similar video that showed a mother elephant protecting her newborn calf from rain by pushing the calf under her belly. This video was taken in the Gudalur municipality of the Nilgiri district in Tamil Nadu.
