Cricketer Prithvi Shaw on Tuesday claimed before a sessions court at Dindoshi in the city that a complaint filed by a social media influencer, who made allegations of her modesty being outraged by Shaw during an argument in 2023, was “frivolous” and aimed at “defaming and harassing” him by misusing his public image.

The woman was arrested in February 2023 on a complaint that she and a friend were involved in an attack on Shaw after he objected to his video being taken while he was out with his friends at a pub.

After getting a bail in the said case, the woman had approached the police and made a counter claim that she was molested by Shaw during the argument and after the police did not register an FIR on her complaint, she approached the magistrate court. The magistrate court had ordered preliminary probe under Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) to ascertain whether there were sufficient grounds to proceed in the case.

The police in June 2023 filed a report stating that there was no evidence to show Shaw had indulged in the offence. Thereafter, the aggrieved woman had approached the sessions court with a revision application.

Shaw’s lawyer, in a reply submitted on Tuesday stated, “The present Criminal Revision Application is false, frivolous, vexatious and filed with the sole intention to malign, defame and harass the respondent by misusing his public image and celebrity status.”

The cricketer added, “After she was released from jail, the applicant has chosen to file the present complaint by playing womanhood card with the sole intention to settle the personal vendetta as counter blast to the FIR. Such belated accusations are not only afterthought but a false, concocted version made with oblique motives.”

“The respondent being a well-known cricketer and the applicant being a struggling actor…the present act has been committed to extort handsomely from the respondent by implicating him in a false complaint,” Shaw’s reply reads.
The court is likely to hear the matter next on March 31.
