BMC takes down 2,103 political banners, flexes to enforce model code of conduct

A day after the State Election Commission (SEC) implemented the model code of conducted in the wake or civic elections to be held on January 15, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday removed 2,103 political banners, flexes and flags from various locations in Mumbai.
The officials said that the drive will be ongoing and in the next one week all the political posters and hoardings will be removed from Mumbai.

Officials also said that according to a rough estimate, around 12,300 banners are erected in the suburbs and island city at present.
The decision was taken following a meeting on Tuesday chaired by Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani.

“All the ward offices have been instructed to take down all posters and banners. Each ward office will also set up a monitoring team that will keep a close watch so that repeat offenders don’t erect banners even after us removing them,” said an official.

After a hiatus of four years, Mumbai will witness civic elections on January, 2026. After the general body of elected representatives got dissolved on March, 2022, Mumbai’s civic body along with all the 28 municipal corporations in Maharashtra remained under an administrator’s rule.
