IPL 2026 Auction Highlights: Cameron Green became the most expensive foreign player in the history of IPL auctions as Kolkata Knight Riders broke the bank to get him for a price tag of Rs 25.20 crore after fending off interest from Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings. However, the bigger talking point is arguably the fact that uncapped Indian players made a splash this year. CSK spent Rs 14.20 crores each on spin-bowling all-rounder Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma while DC snapped up fast bowler Auqib Nabi Dar for Rs 8.40 crore. All three players had base prices of Rs 30 lakh.

IPL Auction 2026 LIVE: Mumbai Indians happy with the team they have

MI have just the one slot left and are done with their overseas slots. This is what owner Akash Ambani had to say to the host broadcaster: "Very satisfied with the team we have. Different challenge, don't think we've had this kinda auction in 19 years. Lowest purse we've come in with, but it shows us how balanced we were. Knew we had to fill just a couple of gaps. Happy with all our picks, just one more to go."

"Atharva Ankolekar - he's a Mumbai boy, we wanted the Mumbai connect back. We also traded Shardul who is captaining Mumbai. We remember we play seven games at Wankhede, that was a critical factor in our planning. Very happy to have Atharva and Danish, who of course plays for Vidarbha.

"We haven't reached our peak for the last five years. Hopefully this is the year. We believe it's a complete and competitive squad."

At least that is what Robin Uthappa thinks on Star Sports. IPL Auction 2026 LIVE: On Cameron Green

After KKR broke the bank for Cam Green, Venkata Krishna B notes:

Although Cam Green was sold for Rs 25.2 crore, the highest ever for an overseas player at an IPL auction, he will take home only Rs 18 crore because of a new rule introduced the BCCI which puts a cap on salary for foreign players.

What does the rule say?

As per the new rule of the BCCI, the maximum fee an overseas player can gain from the mini-auction is determined by the highest retention price or the highest auction price at a mega auction whichever is lower. Since Rishabh Pant was bought for Rs 27 crore, the highest retention price (Rs 18 crore) becomes the cap. If a bid exceeds Rs 18 crore for an overseas player, the amount will go to the BCCI. This rule was brought in after overseas players had a trend of going for huge sums at the mini-auctions.

IPL Auction 2026 LIVE: Cam Green is up

And as soon as Cameron Green's name is announced, Mumbai Indians raise the paddle almost reflexively, maybe to the surprise of other teams since the team only has a purse of Rs 2.75 crore available.

Mumbai and Rajasthan Royals start the bidding war first up. Soon, though, Mumbai pull out of the bidding.

And Kolkata Knight Riders, who have the biggest purse available to them, comes in right when MI pull out of the bidding.

Eventually as the price tag touches Rs 13,80 crore, Royals pull out. And just when Kolkata Knight Riders think they have their man, Chennai Super Kings enter the fray! CSK bid Rs 13.80 crore.

As the price tag reaches Rs 24 crore, CSK have a couple of thinks. But they keep raising the paddle!

Eventually, with the tag at Rs 25.20 crore, CSK pull out and Cam Green will play for KKR!

IPL Auction 2026 LIVE: What Chennai Super kings need from the auctions

Ahead of the auctions, CSK already got hold of one of their prime targets in Sanju Samson. Having used much of their last season looking to identify talents that could serve them for the next season, their replacement picks Dewald Brevis, Ayush Mhatre and Urvil Patel have already strengthened the squad. However, the exit of Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin means, Chennai don’t have frontline Indian spinner at their disposal. Traditionally, CSK have looked at an overseas top-order batsman, couple of all-rounders and a fast bowler when it comes to their overseas picks in the XI. With Afghanistan’s Noor Ahmad taking one of the overseas slot, CSK have need three foreign players who will fit their XI.

With Samson in place as a wicketkeeper option and the top-order pretty much looking intact, it would be interesting to see if CSK still go in search of a proven opener at the top. Cameron Green is an exciting option as he can also play in the middle-order as a finisher and could provide them with firepower. If they need an Indian, there is Prithvi Shaw, a player who went unsold last auction. He has since tried to resurrect his career at Maharashtra where CSK’ captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has had a first-hand look at what Shaw has been doing. Being at CSK could also help for Shaw to find his feet again. However, if they feel confident in Mhatre and Urvil, then they could go big on Venkatesh Iyer and Liam Livingstone. Apart from being all-rounders, will provide the franchise with intent in the middle-order which they currently lack. Bairstow is a left-field option, but since he is one-dimensional, may turn out to be their Plan C. South Africa’s David Miller could also feature in their discussions as he is known to ace the finisher’s role. The problem is he doesn’t bowl. Don’t be surprised if they go back to Rachin Ravindra as a squad player.

With Matheesha Pathirana released, CSK need a back-up option to Nathan Ellis. Mustafizur Rahman and Lungi Ngidi, who have been with the franchise before are reliable options. There is also Matt Henry, one was part of their set-up previously and his pace would be off high value. Beyond them, there is Gerald Coetzee, Anrich Nortje and Jacob Duffy to pick from. With Akash Deep available, CSK would be tempted to go for him alongside J&K Auqib Nabi, Akash Madhwal and Simarjeet Singh.

With Jadeja not around and Ravi Bishnoi and Rahul Chahar could fetch interest from CSK, unless they opt for overseas options who would ultimately cause imbalance.

What to expect?

In a departure from the past, they are showing willingness to invest in young, uncapped talents. Beyond their overseas picks, it will be interesting to see if they tap on local resources who they have been extensively scouting.

IPL Auction 2026 LIVE: What Kolkata Knight Riders need

Despite releasing the likes of Venkatesh Iyer, Andre Russell, Anrich Nortje and Spencer Johnson into the auction pool, the three-time champions still have a core intact. With Sunil Narine, Varun Chakaravarthy, Rinku Singh, Harshit Rana around, they have a base in place. With Ajinkya Rahana, Ramandeep Singh, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Vaibhav Arora around to offer the supporting role, KKR will be looking to focus on three overseas players who would walk into their XI. Australia all-rounder Cameron Green would be top of their wishlist as he can prove to be the ideal replacement for Russell. If they can slot him at the top, they can use Rovman Powell’s power for the finisher’s role that Russell performed for years.

With no frontline wicketkeeper in the team, it would be interesting to see if they go back Quinton de Kock and Rahmanullah Gurbaz. De Kock, didn’t have the best of season this year, but given his recent form, could well be an option for KKR to explore. If not, Jonny Bairstow and Finn Allen have two explosive openers who are no stranger to the franchise circuit. The interesting bit is in the auction list, England’s Ben Duckett is listed in the wicketkeeper category. Given the left-hander’s aggressive game, KKR could take a punt on him as he is capable of causing enough damage in the powerplay. If they prefer to look at uncapped Indians for the role, then Tushar Raheja and Kartik Sharma will be top of their options.

There is a strong possibility that they again go for Venkatesh Iyer, especially if he is available at a lesser price as his ability to bat anywhere gives them the flexibility. For the overseas pacers, they might have their eyes on Matheesha Pathirana and would be hoping to reunite him with mentor Dwayne Bravo. When Bravo was the bowling coach at Chennai Super Kings, Pathirana had a breakthrough season and having struggled in recent times, the Lankan pacer could find a new lease of life at KKR.

What to expect?

With a huge purse at the disposal, KKR have the advantage of out-bidding other franchises when it comes to getting their targets. The franchise not getting their A-list targets would come as a massive surprise.

Dec 16, 2025 01:36 PM IST
IPL Auction 2026 LIVE: What the Sunrisers Hyderabad team need

They definitely need Indian pacers who will be starters in the XI. For successive seasons, the lack of depth in the spin bowling resources has been a concern, so they could be in the market for an experienced spinner with Ravi Bishnoi being an option. With Mohammed Shami traded to Lucknow, they need an experienced seamer to go with Pat Cummins.

What to expect: Don’t be surprised if they spend most of their purse on their bowling resources.

Dec 16, 2025 01:31 PM IST
IPL Auction 2026 LIVE: What does the Rajasthan Royals need from the auction?

Another franchise which strengthened during the trading window with the arrival of Ravindra Jadeja, Sam Curran and Donovan Ferreira, they already look a strengthened team that has seen Sanju Samson leave. An overseas fast bowler who can be a reliable cover for Jofra Archer is needed, which could be the slot they prefer to fill the most. They will have their eyes on uncapped Indians, in particular a spinner who can partner Jadeja. Have plenty of left-handed batsmen in their mix, may look to address the balance

What to expect: Have enough money to fill the slots. Arrival of big names unlikely.

Dec 16, 2025 01:26 PM IST
IPL Auction 2026 LIVE: What do the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru need?

They will definitely enter the auctions to fill the two overseas slot as there are injury concerns around Josh Hazlewood and Liam Livingstone released into the pool, need a overseas all-rounder who can flex muscles in the middle-order. While they have their core intact, it is unlikely they would let these two holes remain open. With a limited purse around, landing one top name shouldn’t be a problem, but if those players remain in KKR and CSK interest, they need to look elsewhere.

What to expect: They showed at the last auction that they came in with clear plans. A repeat of it should help them walk away stronger.

Dec 16, 2025 01:24 PM IST
IPL Auction 2026 LIVE: What do the Mumbai Indians need from the auction?

They will arrive in Abu Dhabi having done a majority of their work during the trade window, which means it won’t be a busy day for the five-time champions at the auction table. With the least amount to spend, big names could be out of their way. Even with uncapped domestic talents, whether they are able to land their prime targets remains to be seen. They do need a few back up options in the spin department and to bat at the top of the order.

What to expect: At every auction, their talent scouts have a habit of unearthing a gem. Who is next is the question.

Dec 16, 2025 01:09 PM IST
IPL Auction 2026 LIVE: What does the Punjab Kings need from the auction?

Surprisingly, they will be amongst the quieter franchises at the auction table as they have decided to retain the core that took them to the final. In terms of their XI or the XII, they have their picks ready, but with Josh Inglis released, need a similar player who can provide the impetus at the top. Similarly, with Glenn Maxwell not around, they will be amongst the teams that pursue Michael Bracewell with interest. An overseas pacer, likely Spencer Johnson or Matt Henry would be in their wishlist.

What to expect: A quiet auction. Have the funds to go big on one player and just sit back and relax.

Dec 16, 2025 01:07 PM IST
IPL Auction 2026 LIVE: What does Lucknow Super Giants need from the auction?

With David Miller released, Lucknow need an overseas finisher with Michael Bracewell a possible option as he can also bowl a few overs of off-break. While Nicholas Pooran, Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram sure shots in the XI, and Matthew Breetzke also in the mix, whether they go searching for an overseas pacer remains to be seen. Having let go off Ravi Bishnoi, they could be in the market for another spinner and few back-up options for their pace-bowling pack.

What to expect: Have a good purse to work around, so won’t be an issue to land any of their targets.

Dec 16, 2025 01:00 PM IST
IPL Auction 2026 LIVE: What Gujarat Titans need from the auction

Their top-order did the bulk of weightlifting last season and the story will be similar this season. While the likes of Washington Sundar, Nishant Sindhu are expected to play a prominent role, they need more reinforcements in the middle-order, particularly after they traded Sherfane Rutherford to Mumbai Indians. With Shahrukh Khan struggling off-late, and Tewatia recovering from injury, they are short on options on that front.

What to expect: Given their purse, they could go big on one of their targets and look at uncapped Indians or overseas players who are affordable at a base price.

Dec 16, 2025 12:55 PM IST
IPL Auction 2026: What Delhi Capitals need from auction?

In Mitchell Starc and Tristan Stubbs have two of their overseas players locked. With Jake Frarse-McGurk and Faf du Plessis released, they are in need of an overseas top-order batsman or an Indian opener who can partner KL Rahul potentially at the top. That they traded Donovan Ferreira – a hard striker who is capable of playing finisher role to Rajasthan Royals means, they would be on the look out for an overseas all-rounder. But whether they manage to get that at the auction remains to be seen given the competition. They would also need an overseas and an Indian seamer to be back-up options for Starc and Natarajan, given their injury history.

What to expect: Other franchises with a bigger purse could outbid them for their prime targets. Their homework will determine how their auction shapes up.

IPL Auction 2026: Will Ravi Bishnoi be the most expensive Indian player?

IPL Auction 2026: Why overseas players will not win more than Rs 18 crore
