Misusing Mukhyamantri Kanyadaan Yojana, the scheme recently maligned for the alleged virginity tests,is no longer going to be easy. The scheme allows economically disadvantaged girls to marry without cost at mass weddings.
Many marriages have taken place under the scheme that has its share of controversies, like minors participating and officers encouraging the ineligible to meet targets.
The state has now made the selection procedure strict by insisting on age proof to screen minors. Widows will have to submit death certificates while the legally separated will have to produce court orders.
At a recent camp in Shahdol,14 women were found to be pregnant after examination by a government gynecologist. The Opposition called the examination a virginity test. The Centre, however, gave the BJP government a clean chit.
Madhya Pradesh Social Justice Minister Ranjana Baghel said every application will be independently verified and reports will be signed and sealed by select officials .
