Mathematician R Ramanujam, who heads the Chennai-based Institute of Mathematical Sciences, has declined the NCERT chairmans job citing personal reasons.
While the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet ACC had approved Ramanujams appointment, the latter declined the offer as he is engaged in research work at Chennai. With the National Council for Educational Research amp; Training NCERT headless for over a year, the Union Human Resource Development HRD Ministry has now sought the ACC approval for another candidate shortlisted by the search-cum selection committee. Incidentally, the ministry was enthused about Ramanujams candidature and felt that he would be a worthy successor to noted academician Prof Krishna Kumar.
Ramanujam had played an active role in formulation of the national curriculum framework and writing of NCERT textbooks.
This, however,is not an isolated incident. Government-run educational institutes are fast losing their sheen going by the rate at which top posts are being declined.
Prof R Srinivasan from IIM-Banaglore,whose candidature as Director IIM-Kashipur was approved by the ACC,had also refused the position citing his spouses health concerns. Earlier this year, noted academician Prof Amitabh Mattoo chose to decline the position of Vice-Chancellor of the new Central University of Jammu on personal grounds. Internationally renowned scholar of English Literature from Jadhavpur University Prof Sukanta Chaudhuri had refused to accept the top job at the Hyderabad-based English and Foreign Language University EFLU in March even after his appointment order had been issued. The EFLU remains headless and the HRD ministry has set up a fresh search-cum-selection committee to scout for new candidates.
