Tamil Nadu CM Stalin expresses gratitude to Anand Mahindra for hailing Chennai’s bio mining initiative to clear 50 lakh metric tonnes of waste from Perugudi site

According to reports, 1.7 million cubic metres of garbage, enough to fill 20 football fields, has been cleared, and the waste has been converted to a range of products, including utensils, glass bottles, concrete slabs, furniture, etc.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin, on Monday, extended gratitude to Anand Mahindra, chairman of Mahindra Group, for lauding Chennai’s sustainable initiative of clearing a mountain of garbage at the 96-acre Perugudi dumpyard using bio-mining tech.

In an X post, Stalin shared that the Greater Chennai Corporation cleared 50 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste out of 90 metric tonnes through the bio mining process by Chennai-based Blue Planet Environment Solutions. He also informed that the remaining waste will be cleared by February 2027.

“Thank you, Thiru @AnandMahindra. The @ChennaiCorp has cleared nearly 50 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste out of a total of 90 lakh metric tonnes through the bio mining process. The remaining waste is targeted to be cleared by February 2027,” Stalin wrote.

Further, he shared that Chennai is implementing scientific solid waste management solutions for landfilling. “We are currently implementing scientific and environmentally friendly solid waste management solutions, with a strong focus on eliminating landfilling and ensuring efficient waste processing,” he added.

Anand Mahindra had hailed the initiative, stating that, “If 50 years of garbage can be reinvented, then there’s hope for India’s waste problem and room for many more such growth stories,” he wrote.

In 2020, the Greater Chennai Corporation launched a project to mine the Perungudi dumpyard to process legacy waste into furniture and recyclables, reducing landfills.
