SRINAGAR: Unidentified gunmen fired at and injured a sarpanch in Wadoora village of Sopore,the second such panchayat poll candidate to be shot in the past week. The sarpanch,Muhammad Maqbool,was rushed to the hospital where his condition is stated to be stable. Earlier this week,sarpanch candidate Ghulam Mohiuddin Chopan was shot at and injured by gunmen at the village Machipora,Zainageer in Sopore.

Bullet-proof cars for Indian diplomats in Pakistan

New Delhi: The government has reviewed the security of Indian diplomatic corps posted in Pakistan and has provided bullet-proof cars to all senior officials. All officials posted in the Indian High Commission in Islamabad have been asked to curtail unnecessary travel and venture out only with proper security guards. Senior diplomats posted in Pakistan have been given bullet-proof vehicles, an official said,referring to various instances of terror attacks in Pakistan. Security of the Islamabad High Commission complex has also been tightened,officials said.

Ex-CJI Balakrishnans brother Bhaskaran passes away

Kochi: Former Chief of Justice of India K G Balakrishnans younger brother,K G Bhaskaran,who resigned as Special Government Pleader following allegations of amassment of wealth disproportionate to known sources of income,died here after prolonged illness,family sources said. Bhaskaran 63 leaves behind wife M V Ratnamma,a retired magistrate,a son and two daughters. Bhaskaran was under treatment for respiratory ailment since a few years and had been under treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences,New Delhi.

Suspended AMU students allowed to write exam

LUCKNOW: Aligarh Muslim University AMU has allowed the final year students who were suspended in the case of clash and firing on campus last month to appear in the examinations beginning from Wednesday. University authorities said that decision was taken on compassionate grounds. On compassionate grounds,university has decided to allow the suspended final year students to take their examinations. There would be over a dozen students who could take examinations now. The decision has been taken because the students would have to apply for admission in other institutions for further studies, said Rahat Abrar,AMU spokesperson.

Naxals hijack CRPF food supplies,burn vehicle

NAGPUR: Despite setbacks in the past month due to several arrests,surrenders and recovery of arms dumps,death of three dalam members in an encounter and hitting a wrong target resulting in civilian casualties,there has been no let-up in Naxals strikes in Gadchiroli. On Sunday,they hijacked a private Tempo laden with food material meant for a CRPF camp and set it afire possibly after unloading the material inside the forest on Nargunda road in Bhamragarh tahsil. The ration was being taken to the Nargunda CRPF camp.

BJP MLAs son shot dead over cricket dispute

Jabalpur: BJP MLA Pratibha Singhs son,Nitin was allegedly shot dead at Matanpur village near here following a petty dispute over a game of cricket,police said on Tuesday. The incident took place Monday night at Belkheda town,when he was shot at by some unidentified assailants,they said. The 34-year-old was soon rushed to Jabalpur where doctors declared him dead.
