
Flood-hit to get materials at low rates
Surat: Owners of flood-affected shops and houses will get building material at low rates. The announcement was made by District Collector R M Shah after a meeting he had with representatives of various agencies. Accordingly, a cement bag of L and T, Narmada, Ambuja and Siddhi companies will be available at Rs 90; a truckload of sand, including transportation, will cost Rs 500; a truckload of gravel, including transportation, will cost Rs 1500; 1000 bricks for Rs 80 and one-metre cement sheet for Rs 90. To avail of this facility, the affected persons will have to procure a certificate from executive engineer-division one of roads and buildings department, for those in urban areas, and district panchayat, for those staying in rural areas, and produce it before dealers.
Public holiday
District Collector R M Shah has declared October 11 as public holiday in Bardoli, Ucchal, Mangrol, Mahuva talukas on account of panchayat elections in these areas. Elections are to be held for various posts in the these talukas of Surat district.
Farmers8217; day
October 9 will be observed as Farmers8217; Day8217; at the Regional Research Institute in Vyara. While Gujarat Agriculture University, Surat Zilla panchayat and Sogardh Tribal Sub-Plan have decided to jointly observe the day, as part of the celebration, a camp will be held to educate farmers about growing sugarcane. Scientists from the Agriculture University will guide the farmers.
State volleyball
The three-day Gujarat State Women8217;s Volleyball tournament will begin in the city from Friday. To be held at Shishukunj Vidyavihar, Jahangirpur, city Police Commissioner Maniram will inaugurate the tournament. Collector R M Shah and DEO Natwar Parmar will also be present at the function, in which Vyayam Shikshak Sangh, a city-based sports organisation, will felicitate national-level sportspersons of the city, who have excelled in various disciplines.
Meeting
A meeting, to chalk out the plans for the forthcoming Nehru Baal Vignan Mela for 1998-99, will be held at the district training centre in Chowk on Thursday. All members of the Shikshak Sangh as well as the District Vignan Vahivati mandal have been directed to be present for the meeting, to be held at noon.
CM8217;s visit
Vadodara: Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel will visit Shinor Taluka on Thursday, according to an official release. He will attend a ceremony to hand over the Community Health Centre, Mota Fofalia to Shri Shaktikrupa Charitable Trust. Prior to this, Minister of State for Panchayat Dilip Patel will lay the foundation stone of a water tank, to be constructed by the village panchayat. Among others, Health Minister Ashok Bhatt and MP Narayan Rathwa will attend the function.
Strike withdrawn
The proposed strike of the Central Gujarat Petrol and Diesel Dealers8217; Association on Thursday has been withdrawn. An association press note said that the strike had been called off following an agreement in New Delhi on Wednesday.
