Justice Sujoy Paul sworn in as Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court

Justice Paul was transferred as a judge of the Calcutta High Court on July 18, 2025 and he is set to retire in June 2026.

Justice Sujoy Paul was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court on Friday, following the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium. The oath was administered by Governor C V Ananda Bose at a ceremony in court room number one in the presence of current and former Judges, state ministers and judicial officers.

Justice Paul was transferred as a judge of the Calcutta High Court on July 18, 2025 and he is set to retire in June 2026. He was officiating as the Acting Chief Justice of the High Court from October 8, 2025, to January 15, 2026, since the retirement of former Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee congratulated Chief Justice Sujoy Paul on X, saying, “Sincere congratulations to Justice Shri Sujoy Paul on his being sworn in as the Hon’ble Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.”

Chief Justice Paul assured to devote every effort to maintaining the purity and efficiency of the institution. “I shall devote every effort for maintaining the purity and efficiency of this institution,” he said, adding that he had received full cooperation from members of the Bar.

In his speech, Chief Justice Paul also acknowledged the contribution of his mother, Manjushri Paul, an assistant teacher in a government school and a President’s award recipient. “She was not only my first teacher in life, but my class teacher in school,” he said, noting that she was present in the courtroom during the oath-taking event.

Born in June, 1964, to Late Noni Gopal Paul and Manjushri Paul, the chief justice had studied in Pandit L S Jha Model Higher Secondary School and graduation, post-graduation and law degree from Rani Durgavati University, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. According to the Telangana High Court website he had enrolled as an advocate in the year 1990 in the Bar Council of Madhya Pradesh and actively practised in civil, constitutional, industrial and service and other branches of law and appeared before various courts. He was elevated as judge of Madhya Pradesh High Court in May, 2011 and as a permanent judge in April, 2014. Justice Paul took oath as Judge of Telangana High Court in March 2024, the website said.
