NEW DELHI: The much-hyped entry of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) into cellular services was stayed by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Tuesday, which issued notices to Department of Telecom (DoT) and MTNL in response to a petition filed by the Cellular Operators Association of India. The petitioners had questioned the government’s right to license new service providers without the recommendations of TRAI regarding the need and timing of such new service providers.

Jain questioned

NEW DELHI: J K Jain, former BJP MP in the Rajya Sabha and owner of the now defunct JAIN Television, was interrogated by the Enforcement Directorate on Tuesday for an alleged FERA violation, the questioning going on well past midnight. The ED is reported to have acted on complaints from former NRI shareholders in his venture that Jain had been misguiding them about his foreign exchange earnings.
