20 injured as Pandits, police clash

JAMMU: At least 20 people were injured, six of them seriously, when a procession of Kashmiri Pandits, defying prohibitory orders on the 10th day of the Wandhama massacre on Tuesday, clashed with police. The demonstrators pelted stones on a posse of state police and para-military forces. The run-and-chase continued for nearly two hours.

Literacy landmark

NEW DELHI: In what is being considered a major breakthrough for the country in the field of education, India has achieved a literacy rate of 60 per cent, up from 52 per cent in 1991, Education Secretary P R Dasgupta said here on Tuesday. Addressing a press conference here, Dasgupta said the country had made remarkable strides in the field of education since independence when the literacy rate was about 15 per cent.

Plane crash

BHOPAL: In a major air crash in Madhya Pradesh, six senior executives of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) were killed when their six-seater company plane crashed between Gunderdehi and Amergunj in Rajnandgaon district last night. The officials in the Beech Kingair F-90 aircraft included director (operations) S M Aeron, executive director (operations) T K Ghosh, general managers K S Chandra and U K sharma and senior manager K Padmanabh. The plane was being piloted by executive director of the company Capt Mohan Verghese.
