NC leader among 11 killed in J&K

SRINAGAR: A block president of ruling National Conference (NC), a security jawan and a militant were among 11 people killed and a former member of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council escaped bid on his life in the State since last evening. Militants entered the house of Ghulam Mohammad Dar, 64, NC block president at Rakh-e-Shilwat near Sumbal, in Baramulla district last evening and shot at and critically wounded him. Dar was shifted to hospital where he died today.

Arms seized

NAGERCOIL: Three bombs, 15 detonators, 1.5 kg gun powder and 1.5 kg gun salt were seized from four persons in Thengapattinam village in Kanyakumari district today. The four were also involved in the storing of 43 bombs, 200 grams of RDX in Thengapattinam village, seized by the police on Thursday. With this arrest, the total number of persons taken into custody in connection with Thursday’s seizure has risen to five.

TN order on lifer

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Governmenttoday ordered the release of 109 prisoners who had been sentenced to undergo life imprisonment and have completed 10 years of prison life. Chief Minister M Karunanidhi had ordered that the 109 lifers fulfilling this norm be released on September 15, the birth anniversary of DMK founder leader late C N Annadurai.

Gawli man killed

MUMBAI: A gangster, owing allegiance to Arun Gawli gang, was killed after some unidentified miscreants pumped bullets into him from a truck near Byculla railway station here today. The victim was identified as Naresh Krishna Surve (35). The miscreants came in an open red truck at fired at Naresh. He was rushed to Nair Hospital where he was declared dead before admission.

Rains claim seven

NASHIK: Heavy rains lashing several parts of Nasik and Jalgaon districts of Maharashtra since yesterday have claimed seven lives besides causing extensive damage to fruit and vegetable crops. Five persons including three of a family travelling in an autorickshaw from Chopda toChehardi were washed away in swirling flood waters. The bodies were later recovered.
