US President Donald Trump on Wednesday doubled down on the rhetoric on gaining the control of Greenland and said that America “needs the island for the purpose of national security.”

In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed that “NATO should be leading the way for us to get it,” and “if we don’t, Russia or China will, and that is not going to happen!”

The US president’s remark came just hours ahead of Denmark and Greenland leaders’ talks with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the White House on Wednesday.

In a detailed post, Trump said, “The United States needs Greenland for the purpose of National Security. It is vital for the Golden Dome that we are building. NATO should be leading the way for us to get it. IF WE DON’T, RUSSIA OR CHINA WILL, AND THAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!”

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron said that if the sovereignty of a European country and ally gets affected, the effects it could have would be unprecedented. “We do not underestimate statements on Greenland,” Macron added.

The foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland are scheduled to meet Vance at the White House following weeks of threats by Trump to control Greenland, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark.

Trump, in the social media post added, “Militarily, without the vast power of the United States, much of which I built during my first term, and am now bringing to a new and even higher level, Nato would not be an effective force or deterrent – not even close! They know that, and so do I.”

Leaders of Greenland and Denmark have reiterated their stance that the island is not for sale and that threats of force are reckless and security concerns must be resolved through dialogues among the allies. Prominent countries in the European Union have backed Denmark’s stance.
