Seven arrested in Panchkula for online betting on Women’s Premier League cricket matches

The Panchkula police in Haryana have said they busted a racket involved in online betting on Women’s Premier League (WPL) cricket matches, arresting seven people from a rented house in Sector 21 on Monday night.
The police said on Wednesday that they also recovered Rs 7 lakh in cash, along with four laptops, 46 mobile phones, two computer monitors, three tablets, and a sound recorder from the house. The arrests and seizures followed a tip-off the police received late on Monday night.

Bets were being placed on an ongoing cricket match between Uttar Pradesh and Bengaluru when a team of detective staff led by in-charge Mandeep Singh raided the spot, according to the police.
The police identified the arrested accused as Anil Kumar, Pawan Mahajan, and Sameer Wadhwa of Chandigarh; Amit Bhatia, Nipun Arora, and Ankit Aggarwal of Panchkula; and Anshu Sharma of Jammu.
They were booked under section 4(1) of the Gambling Act, said Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Arvind Kamboj.
The police are analysing the electronic devices to trace financial transactions and identify others involved in the racket.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) Manpreet Singh Sudan said three of the accused—Sameer Wadhwa, Pawan Mahajan, and Amit Bhatia—were produced in court on Tuesday and remanded in one-day police custody.
“This gang was misleading youth and the general public by using modern technology. We thoroughly interrogated the accused during remand to reach the roots of this syndicate and identify where all their connections extend,” said Shibash Kabiraj, Police Commissioner, Panchkula.
The court sent all the accused to judicial custody on Wednesday, the police said.
More arrests may follow as further investigation is underway, they added.
