
Govt fiat to MTV
LUCKNOW: THE music entertainment channel MTV has been asked to withdraw the Indian tricolour from its logo with immediate effect as it amounted to an insult to the national flag, Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said on Monday. He told media persons that government would initiate legal action against American firm Viacom Entertainments8217;, beaming MTV, for bringing disrespect to the tricolour.

Show cause on plastic
NEW DELHI: DELHI HC on Monday issued show cause notices to the Centre and Delhi Government on a petition seeking ban on the use of plastic carry bags and containers. Notices were issued to the ministries of Health and Environment and the Health Department of Delhi Government asking them to file replies within four weeks while fixing further hearing on the petition on November three.
Khan, Jains discharged
NEW DELHI: SPECIAL Judge VB Gupta Monday discharged former Bahujan Samaj Party MP Arif Mohammed Khan in the Rs 65-crore Jain hawala case. Finding no evidence against any of the accused persons which could be converted into legal evidence, the judge also discharged the three Jain brothers 8212; SK Jain, BR Jain and NK Jain 8212; and their secretary JK Jain.
Telecom scam trail
NEW DELHI: A formal trial began in the Rs 1.68 crore telecom scam on Monday with a senior Home Ministry official and an Assistant Director General Vigilance of Department of Telecom DoT submitting before a city court that they had recommended prosecution of former minister Sukh Ram and DoT deputy director Runu Ghosh respectively only after examining the CBI investigation report. Joint secretary in the Ministry of Home V K Malhotra and DoT Vigilance Director K Narayan, appearing as CBI witnesses, told Special Judge Ajit Bharihoke that the prosecution of Sukh Ram and Ghosh were authenticated only after perusal of the agency reports pertaining to the case against them.
Assam flood
GUWAHATI: Flood fury continued unabated in Assam causing unprecedented devastation8217; in 21 districts of the State claiming 137 lives and affecting 40 lakh people, official sources said here on Monday. The floods this year, described as the worst since 1950, have submerged 2.21 hectare of crop land, damaged nearly 16,000 houses and disrupted traffic on national highways 52, 37 and 31. Food packets were being airdropped to marooned people in Dhakuakhana, sub-division in Lakhimpur, Dhemaji district and Majuli sub-division in Jorhat district. Flood waters have also submerged vast areas of the Kaziranga National Park forcing hundred of animals to take shelter upland.
Bail extended
NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Monday ordered constitution of a team of doctors to examine the health of former union minister S Krishna Kumar, an accused in a FERA violation case, and extended his interim bail till October 13. Additional district and sessions Judge Sharda Aggarwal extended his interim bail on medical grounds on furnishing of two local sureties of Rs 2.5 lakh each. The Court ordered that the team of doctors of the All-India Institute of medical Sciences AIIMS would examine Kumar8217;s health and submit its report by September 26. Krishna Kumar, suffering from acute diabetes and heart problem, was arrested on May 26 in connection with five foreign transactions during 1992-96 in alleged violation of FERA.
Khan discharged
NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Monday discharged former union minister and Bahujan Samaj Party MP Arif Mohammad Khan in the Rs 65-crore Jain hawala case. Special Judge V B Gupta, in his 132-page order, also discharged the three Jain brothers 8211; N K Jain, S K Jain, B R Jain and their secretary J K Jain, all co-accused with Khan in the case, saying there was no material on record to frame charges against them. The agency had said Jain brothers allegedly paid bribe money to Khan, who was the Union Minister of State for Energy during December, 1989 to March, 1991 on behalf of the French company. The Court held that prima facie there was no evidence on record to substantiate the allegations.
Bus service
BANGALORE: Karnataka government would sign agreements to enhance volume of inter-state bus operations between the State and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh and Goa during this month, State Transport Minister P G R Scindhia said on Monday. Talking to the media here, he said he would sign the agreement with Andhra Pradesh government at Hyderabad on September 9 and with Goa government at Panaji on September 15 or 16. The new depots would function at Mysore, Tumkur, Koppal, Haveri, Bidadi, Harohally and Chikkodi from November, he said.
