Ahead of Pune civic polls, cash worth Rs 1 lakh, empty envelopes and voter list seized from 2 SUVs; probe on

The police said the seizures were made from two locked SUVs parked in the Khadimachine area of Pune City.

The Pune police and the Election Commission’s Flying Squad seized cash worth Rs 1 lakh, more than 300 empty envelopes, and a voters’ list from two SUVs in the Yewalewadi area of the city on Tuesday night ahead of civic polls.

According to the Pune police, an investigation has been initiated to ascertain the source of the cash and determine the candidate or political party for whom it was allegedly intended to be distributed.

“The items that have been seized suggest that the cash was meant to be distributed to voters. An investigation into the seizure will be conducted by FST, and the office of the returning officer to ascertain the source of the cash and to determine the candidate or political party for whom it was allegedly meant to be distributed,” said a senior Pune City police officer.

The police said the seizures were made from two locked SUVs parked in the Khadimachine area of Pune City.

At around 9 pm Tuesday, a team from the Yewalewadi Police Station responded to a report of a violation of the model code of conduct in the Khadimachine area.

“Accordingly, the information was conveyed to the Flying Squad Team (FST) formed for the Pune Municipal Corporation elections, and a team from the Yewalewadi Police Station was dispatched to the spot. As per the information received, at Khadimachine Chowk, two vehicles were found in a locked condition,” an officer from Pune City police said.

“Upon thorough inspection of both suspicious vehicles by the Flying Squad Team (FST), two bundles of Rs 500 currency notes totalling Rs 1 lakh were found in the first car. In the second car, various items, including a voters’ list, 255 white and 80 khaki-coloured empty envelopes, 21 small notebooks, eight large notebooks, and other items,” the officer added.

The officer said a panchnama, the official seizure and inspection record, was carried out in this regard, and the Flying Squad Team informed the returning officer. “Further legal action is being undertaken,” the officer added.
