Criminal actA docu-drama on ZEE TV — India’s Most Wanted — was started to act as a missing link between the police and the public. And guess what? It actually worked. The serial has helped the police nab two criminals hiding in Delhi! The programme is an attempt to collect information about wanted criminals and then moulding it into a docu-drama form, based on actual and authentic facts. Along with enacting the crime, photographs and sketches of the real criminals are also flashed. And that is how Sushila Shrivastava, a fake doctor, and Anoop Kumar Roy, absconding after an alleged murder, were caught. Now, that’s a tough act for the programme to follow.

Temple techno

Razzberry Rhinoceros, the suburban pub, has a trendy new bar designed by the young and talented whiz-kid Kisaley, under commission from Benson & Hedges. The result: A fascinating sculptured 3-D sandstone textured bar area. Embodying the Eastern influence of Tantra through murals and faux statuettes in warm, almost goldtones, the outcome is one of a temple for the trendy in the midst of Techno. Check it out, it’s worth a dekko.

Dak gharThe history of DAKS began in 1894 when Simeon Simpson established a tailoring factory in London. He started tailoring suits to customer’s measurements. But moved to the ready-made market when he saw that the real growth lay in that area. Today, its USP lies in the fact that DAKS garments are compared to the works of artists like Turner, Constable and Moore. Why? Each material is named after an artist and the palette includes shades of camel, red, moss green, olive, burgundy, tartan, black, blue, navy and ochre.

Then for those of you who like a culture fix, there is showbizindia.com/vasavadatta. The site is based on the play Vasavadatta the first theatre production to have its own web page. Written bySri Aurobindo — based on the Sanskrit classic by Mahakavi Bhasa — the play is directed by Janak Toprani. It has been running on Mumbai’s stage for a while and it stars model Bikram Saluja, Ratan Batliwala and Vekeana Dhillon. The only thing we don’t understand is that if you can see the play why would you surf the site? Maybe diehard fans of the model are the target audience.

The big top

Bharat Dabholkar’s play Circus is attempting to add a Saturday Night Live-element to its performances. Every weekend they have a celebrity visit the stage, hog the show and add a touch of the topical. Last week, TV anchor Javed Jafferi was the star. This weekend, watch out for pop singer Sanjay Maroo. His song `Tu Hi Tu’ is being touted as "an entire attitude, a way of life that easily becomes ours if only we had the courage".

Well, we don’t know if that is true but considering that it is Circus’s silver jubilee show, they need to plug it as a mega event.

And, just in case you haven’t heard about Maroo,he is a self-taught musician who has played with Rock Machine and Divya. In 1995, he went solo and released Fountain Of Love, — an English album. This year, he has moved to Indipop, as right now, that’s what sells. And his new venture has worked!

In Circus, he is kept company by actors like Vijoo Khote, Tanaaz Currim and Vihang Nayak.

Ad factor

The week beginning June 21, 1998 saw the advertising celebrities of the world come together at Cannes. This time Gautam Rakshit, director, Advertising Avenues was part of a 44-member jury — at the 45th Cannes International Advertising Festival. He was kept company by Rediffusion’s Arun Nanda, O&M’s Ranjan Kapur, Bennett Coleman’s Pradeep Guha and creative whiz’s Mahesh Mathai and Prasun Pandey. But having a large Indian contingent cannot turn the tables against Nike, Volvo and Snickers Chocolates. Whether the ad sells the brand or the brand sells the ad, brand equity won the day.

Book worms
