
Stamp to honour women pilots
The Governor of Maharashtra, Dr P C Alexander, released a commemorative stamp of 8220;Indian Women Pilots8221; today at the Air India auditorium, Nariman Point. Chief Post Master General, Mumbai, D S Balachandra presented the first album to the governor. The stamp commemorates the contribution of Indian women to the aviation industry.
Photo contest on ecology, forts
A colour photograph competition is being organised by the Holiday Hikers8217; Club, Vile Parle, on forts and ecology. A maximum of two entries per subject in 6 by 8 format will be permitted. Entries must be accompanied by name, address of the candidate, name of the fort and location. Varsity students8217; council polls
In the recently held elections tothe students8217; council of the Mumbai university, Archana Rajan General Secretary, D G Ruparel College was elected unopposed to the post of president. Ajay Sukhatankar GS, Mithibai college was elected GS.
Lions celebrate Service Week
Lions Clubs in the city are celebrating Service Week8217; between October 2 and 8 and have organised a series of activities in aid of the needy. District chairperson Activities Bhavana Shah said the clubs have adopted8217; Mumbai in collaboration with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation BMC and Dignity Foundation for cleaning and greening the city. On the occasion of World Personalised Service Day on October 8, Shah will announce the names of 150 streets that have been adopted.
Diagnosis centre for cancer n A cancer diagnosis centre will be inaugurated at the Cama and Albless government hospital for women and children near CST on October 7. The function will be attended by Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde and Health Minister Daulatrao Aher. The centre will havea mammography machine, an endoscopy unit, a gastroscope and a dental machine to detect oral cancer, which will be installed at a cost of Rs 45 lakh. The funds for purchasing the machine were obtained from the District Planning Development Company, said medical superintendent Dr K G Tripathy.
Seminar by women scientists
The Indian Women Scientists Association will hold its silver jubilee international conference between October 8 and 11 at the Nehru Centre Auditorium, Worli. Dr R Chidambaram, Atomic Energy Commission chairperson, will inaugurate the conference. Around 150 women scientists have registered their membership for the conference.
Award for best writing
The Asia Media Information and Communication Centre Limited AMICC has instituted awards for excellence in writing on the print media, radio and television. The entries, in English, must be between 3,000-6,000 words with a 200 word synopsis. They must reach the AMIC office in Singapore before March 15, 1999.
