CHANDIGARH, Nov 3: The Punjab state committee of the Communist Party of India Marxist has taken strong exception to the demand for separate civil code for the Sikhs.

The demand has been raised by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee and supported by Akal Takht Jathedar Bhai Ranjit Singh.

State party secretary Balwant Singh, said the state committee was of the opinion the demand was not only anti-women and reactionary but also against the democratic and pioneering traditions of the Sikh community, according to which women enjoyed equal and dignified status.

Balwant Singh said the separate personal law would deprive women of their share in the ancestoral property and social equality.

The state committee reviewed the general and political situation in the state and was of the view the Akali Dal-BJP 8220;communal government8221; in the state headed by Parkash Singh Badal was getting alienated from the people. Even the peasantry, the support base of the Akalis, felt let down. That the government had failed on all fronts was evident from the spiralling prices and rampant corruption.

The state committee endorsed the call for general strike on December 11 against price rise and communalism.

The state committee strongly criticised the police for the kidnapping of Kaka Singh, a tehsil committee member of the party in Jalalabad and sought intervention of the Chief Minister. It was decided to stage a dharna jointly with the CPI in front of Chief Minister8217;s residence on November 16 for the release of Kaka Singh.
