MUMBAI, AUG 13: Irregularities have come to light in the MBBS examination first and second year of the University of Mumbai, held in the first half of 1999. Ten answersheets 8212; nine from first year MBBS and one from second year MBBS 8212; were found to have been tampered with.

University officials, who feel the matter should be referred to the Criminal Investigation Department, will now consult the Chancellor for his opinion in this regard. The decision was taken at a Board of Examination BoE meeting held today.

While the evaluation of the MBBS papers is under the centralised assessment scheme, an examiner from G S Seth Medical College, Parel, complained to the university that there were irregularities in the assessment of second year MBBS papers. It was subsequently found that in 10 papers, supplements had been inserted in the original answersheets. These supplements had been inserted in select answersheets, despite the fact that with bar coding it is next to impossible to identify the candidates, sources said.

The university then placed the matter before its Unfair Means Enquiry Committee last month. The panel, whose report was tabled this week, stated though it was evident that there were malpractices, it was difficult to pinpoint the blame on any particular examiner, according to sources. The committee therefore recommended that the matter should be referred to the CID.

At the BOE meeting held today, it was decided that the Chancellor8217;s opinion should be sought on initiating a CID inquiry. University Vice-Chancellor Dr Snehalata Deshmukh said that as the matter was 8220;serious8221;, the university felt it should be referred to the CID.
