
Paes, Bhupathi in top 15
NEW DELHI: India8217;s doubles duo of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi, have crossed US 100,000 in prize money earnings, following their Dubai Open doubles win.
They netted 78,000 alone from the Dubai Open triumph. The ace duo had earlier won the Qatar Open doubles before bowing out in the semi-finals of the Australian Open.
Paes, who is 11th on the latest ATP money winners list issued today, has thus far earned 105,509 from singles and doubles play this year while Bhupathi, one rung below, has earnings of 100,013.
Indians invited
MUMBAI: Two Indian International Masters, Ravi Hegde and Sekhar Sahu, have been invited to participate in Capella de Grande International Open Chess Tournament in France between February 20 to March 1.
About 200 international title holders Grandmasters and International Masters were expected to participate from about 60 countries of the world.
India miss out
NEW DELHI: INDIA narrowly lost its bid for a final berthin the fifth Polo World Cup when it was edged out by a narrow 25-23 goal margin by Australia in the zonal play-off held at Melbourne over the weekend.
India lost the first game 7-15, but came back strongly to win the next at 16-10. However, that was not enough as the hosts 25 had scored two more goals than India 23 and were edged out on the number of goals scored.
Samir Suhag scored three goals while captian Lokendra Singh plus four and Harshwardhan Singh plus 2 scored a brace each, a polo association release here today said.
National aquatics
CALCUTTA: The senior National aquatic championships for 1998 will be held in Bangalore from October 28 to November one.
The national sub-junior and the junior championships will be held at Ludhiana in the first week of September.
The the age group national aquatic championhips for diving will be held at Goa from May 30 to 31. The vice-president of the Swimming Federation of India, Ramanuj Mukhopadhyay, said today that the venues were finalisedat the annual general meeting of SFI in New Delhi.
He said that the Asia Pacific age group swimming championships will be held at Pennang in Malaysia from August 7 to 9 this year.
Selection trial for Indian contingent for Asia Pacific Swimming Championships will be held at Talkotra Stadium in New Delhi on June 20 and 21.
