Chandrakanta to lead women’s team

LUCKNOW: Chandrakanta was named captain of the Indian team for the International Women’s Triangular Cricket Series beginning at the KD Singh Babu Stadium here on January 27 on Friday. The coaching camp for the team would be held from January 19.

Manipur dominate

DURGAPUR: Manipur’s Ratan Singh, N Ramo Singh, David Noashe Pam and N Bikram Singh stormed into the finals of the 14th National Sub-Junior Boxing Championship at Durgapur Nehru Stadium on Friday. The other finalists were Hari Udaya Kumar (TN), Rajesh Saini (Rajasthan), Baloir Singh (Delhi), Jai Bhawan Singh (Haryana), Prajot Kawlekar (Goa), Sanjoy Rai, Amardeep Gurung and Vinod Mizzar (Meghalaya), Utkarsh Negi and Abhishek Shah (UP) Dup Bahadur Pun and Khemanand Beiwal (Services), Sarad Kumar Swain (MP) and T Chetri (Assam).

WB bag 7 gold

PUNE: West Bengal bagged seven gold and three bronze medals on the final day of the first sub-junior and fourth Sprint Rowing National Championship atthe Royal Connaught Boat Club here on Friday. West Bengal claimed three gold medals in the sub-junior boys’ section, two in women’s open and one each in the men’s challenger and the sub-junior girls’ sections.

Four Natl marks

CALCUTTA: Four junior national records were set in the Junior National Weightlifting Championships being held here. Pondicherry lifter V Sangaran, Punjab’s Pradeep Sharma, Nitu Sharma of Delhi and Narender Singh, Punjab set national records.

Eight qualify

LUCKNOW: Eight teams qualified for the quarter-final of the All-India Jagdish Agarwal Memorwial Oudh Bridge Championship played at the Gymkhana Club here. Bihar Bridge Association, Lal’s Lucknow, Maheshwari Allahabad, AK Ganguli Calcutta, B Majumdar Calcutta, Sharma’s Lucknow, RM Gupta’s Aligarh, Boat House Club, Nainital are the teams.

Punjab triumph

PATIALA: Punjab made it a grand double in junior cricket, winning the All India Vijay Merchant Cricket Tournament (under 16) beating Uttar Pradesh on thebasis of a 33-run first innings lead even as the three-day weather-hit final ended in a draw today.

MUMBAI: Bangkok Asian Games women’s 5000 m and 800 m silver medallists Sunita Rani and Rosa Kutty and men’s 1,500 m and 10,000 m bronze winners Bahadur Prasad and Gulab Chand would take part in the All India Railway cross-country championship at Lonavla on January 18 and 19.
