The much-watched elections to Mumbai’s municipal corporation are over, but the city will not get a mayor immediately. This is not just because the winning Mahayuti alliance partners, the BJP and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, are locked in a tussle over who will get the prized post. It is because the mayor’s election is governed by a separate legal process that begins only after the new House is formally constituted.

Why BJP has to rely on Shinde Sena: Although the BJP emerged as the single largest party with 89 seats in the BMC House of 227, it fell short of a majority on its own in the BMC and the Shinde Sena appears reluctant to hand over the Mayor’s post to the BJP on a platter. With the BJP unwilling to compromise on the “administrative control of the BMC”, the issue is expected to be discussed when Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis returns from Davos on January 24 after attending the World Economic Forum.

Shinde-Sena corporators at a hotel: Meanwhile, the newly elected corporators from Shinde-led Sena were shifted to a hotel soon after the BMC election results, and have been kept there for two days now. While the Shinde Sena has claimed that its 29 newly elected corporators were called to the hotel for an “orientation session”, the Opposition has alleged “resort politics”.

Mumbai Mayor BMC Election Result 2026 Live Updates: Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut on Monday questioned the shifting of corporators-elect from ruling ally Shiv Sena to hotels, asserting that no party could easily stake claim to the BMC mayor's post, going by the mandate in the recent civic polls.

In the recently concluded civic polls, the alliance of the BJP and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena won a clear majority in the 227-member BMC, securing 89 and 29 seats, respectively. The Uddhav Thackeray-led Sena (UBT) won 65 seats, while its ally MNS emerged victorious on six.

The Shiv Sena has shifted its 29 members to a hotel in Mumbai, ostensibly for an orientation workshop to make them aware of the functioning of the country's richest civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The move followed the declaration of the BMC poll results, which showed that the seats won by Shiv Sena are crucial for the BJP, to draw up its strategy to get Mahayuti's mayor installed.

"Shinde has already shifted his corporators to a five-star hotel and, as per my information, the BJP is also planning to move its corporators to a safer place. Who is afraid of whom? You are the government. The chief minister is watching corporators being shifted while attending the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos (Switzerland). It is amusing," Raut told reporters.

While the Shinde Sena has claimed that its 29 newly elected corporators were called to the hotel for an “orientation session”, the Opposition has alleged “resort politics”. Addressing the media after meeting his corporators, Shinde denied the Opposition’s claim and maintained that the “Mumbai Mayor will be from the Mahayuti”. While the BJP emerged as the single largest party with 89 seats in the BMC House of 227, it will have to depend on the Shinde Sena’s 29 seats to go past the halfway mark of 114.
