After IIT Kanpur suicide, Education Ministry forms three-member panel to review student suicides and support systems.
A 25-year-old PhD scholar at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, died on Tuesday afternoon after he allegedly jumped from the sixth floor of a residential building on the campus, police said.
No suicide note was recovered from the victim, identified as Ramswroop Ishram, a research scholar in the Department of Earth Sciences.
This is the third incident of a student dying allegedly by suicide at the institution in the past four months, a senior police official said.
Preliminary findings suggest that it was a case of suicide, and there were no indications of foul play, as several people were present on the campus at the time of the incident, police said.
Forensic experts were also called to the spot to collect evidence.
Ishram, who lived in a room of the New SBRA residential building along with his wife and three-year-old daughter, was suffering from depression, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances leading to his death, officials added.
The victim was a native of Churu district in Rajasthan.
The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, which is likely to be conducted on Wednesday, they said.
According to the police, a team rushed to the spot after receiving information that a scholar had jumped from a residential building on Tuesday afternoon and was taken to hospital. When police reached the hospital, they were informed that the man had succumbed to his injuries.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) SM Qasim Abidi said they found that the victim was suffering from depression for a long time and had undergone counselling on several occasions, including two days ago.
Ishram’s family in Rajasthan has been informed of the development, officials said.
On December 29, Jai Singh Meena (26), a final-year BTech student, was allegedly found hanging in his hostel room at the institution. A suicide note was also recovered from the spot, police had said.
