Punjab to host 40 free shows of Ashutosh Rana’s play ‘Humare Ram’Actor Ashutosh Rana plays Ravan in the theatre production, Humare Ram.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab is planning to stage the popular Ashutosh Rana and Rahul R Bhuchar’s theatrical ‘Humare Ram’ — a retelling of the Ramayana — in various cities across the state. The Punjab Cabinet gave its nod to the decision in its meeting on Tuesday.

Finance Minister Harpal Cheema briefed the media about various Cabinet decisions. During the briefing, he said that 40 shows of the play ‘Humare Ram’ will be staged in Punjab. The play would be offered to the spectators free of cost and the government would bear the cost of staging the plays. The ticket of the pay starts at Rs 799.

The Cultural Affairs Committee of the state’s Tourism and Culture Department is the nodal agency to organise the shows and decide on the cities for the plays to be staged.

Cheema said, “We will use auditoriums of universities and other institutions to stage the play.”

Another AAP leader said, “We had booked these shows after talking to the organisers… We could get slots only in September and October.”

Recently, the AAP had also organised the 350th anniversary commemoration of Guru Teg Bahadur. In February this year, the government will also celebrate the 650th birth anniversary of Guru Ravidas. The department of tourism and cultural affairs is the organising agency of these programs.

“We are out to do lok sewa. We will organise five to six shows of the play in cities depending on the demand. Anybody interested in watching the play would be allowed to do so,” said a government source.

The source also said the shows will be staged in major cities including Amritsar, Jalandhar, Patiala, Bathinda, Mohali and Ludhiana. “We will ensure a venue for 2,500. If the play will be in high demand, then we will have multiple shows.”

The department will soon organise a meeting to prepare the blueprint of the program.
