Distinction for Soumya

NEW DELHI: A veteran at 21, Delhi-based Soumya Rao will hold court from the high chair of an umpire as tennis action unfurls on Sunday at the Bangkok Asian Games.

The only woman umpire in the country with a `white badge’, an International Tennis Federation (ITF) accreditation to officiate international matches, Soumya will chair early rounds at the Bangkok Land Sports Complex, venue of tennis events.

CALCUTTA: Arup Basak and Anindita Chakraborty retained their Eastern India Table Tennis Championship men’s and women’s titles.

Anindita picked up her third consecutive crown with a 22-20, 21-14, 21-12 victory over national champion Kasturi Chakraborty, while for Basak, it was six-in-a-row. He defeated Arjun Dutta 22-20, 21-13, 21-12 to retain the title which he had first won in 1993.

Air-India lose

Bengal, UP win HYDERABAD: Bengal beat Uttar Pradesh 15-3, 6-15, 15-2, 15-2 in the girls’ final of the 21st Sub-Junior National volleyball championship. Andhra Pradesh were third, beating Tamil Nadu 15-6, 8-15, 15-9, 15-8.UP boys reigned supreme, beating AP 15-4, 15-11, 15-4 while Karnataka took the third spot, defeating Tamil Nadu 15-6, 8-15, 15-9, 15-8.
