The railway police in Karnataka have arrested two men on charges of robbing a train passenger after sedating him with sleeping pills during a journey earlier this month.
The police identified the accused as Safar and Sataram, both from Bihar. They said the accused were habitual offenders and were being interrogated to ascertain their possible involvement in similar cases.
While travelling to Danapur in Patna on January 2 on a train, Krishna Kumar, a Bihar native who works as a labourer at KR Puram in Bengaluru, struck up a conversation with the two accused, who introduced themselves as fellow residents of his state and gradually gained his confidence, according to the police.
During a halt at a railway station, the two accused got down from the train and returned with tea, which they offered to Krishna Kumar. Unaware of their intentions, he consumed the beverage, noticing that the two men were also drinking tea. However, his tea had allegedly been laced with a sedative.
Soon after, Krishna Kumar lost consciousness. The accused then fled with his gold chain, Rs 4,000 in cash, and his bag, the police said.
Based on a complaint filed by Krishna Kumar, the Baiyappanahalli railway police in Bengaluru registered a case and launched an investigation. The police later arrested the accused while they were allegedly attempting to rob another passenger similarly.
The police have advised train passengers to avoid accepting food or beverages from strangers and to remain vigilant during their journeys.
