linares, Feb 22: Defending champion Viswanathan Anand was held to a draw by Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine in the first-round of the 16th Linares chess tournament, here, yesterday.

England8217;s Michael Adams defeated Peter Leko Hungary to go into the lead after the first-round. The other two games between Kasparov-Svidler and Kramnik-Topalov in this eight man league were drawn. Today, Anand clashes with Leko with white pieces.

Results First-round: V Anand India drew V Ivanchuk Ukraine, G Kasparov Rus drew P Svidler Rus; V Kramnik Rus drew V Topalov Bul; M Adams Eng bt P Leko Hun.

Kunte loses Dhaka: India8217;s International Master Abhijit Kunte lost to Bangladesh Grandmaster Niaz Murshed in the 4th round of the United Insurance Grandmaster chess tournament today. Playing black, Kunte 2 employed Nimzo Indian Defence and sacrificed a pawn on the 10th move but Niaz played accurately to win after 85 moves. Bangladesh8217;s IM Abdullah Al-Rakib, British GM Nigel Short and GM Yuri Sulaman shared thetop position with three points.
