
MUMBAI, JUNE 20: After scaling a Himalayan peak and cycling from Mumbai to Agra, Prasad Bedekar 40 has another feat to his credit. In the latest adventure which involved considerable skill and hardwork, he has rolled out a 40 feet long joss stick agarbatti and earned a place in the Limca Book of Records.
Bedekar8217;s creation surpasses the previous record of 14 feet 9 inches held by Mehezban Lahewala from Ahmedabad. It is 4 and a half inches thick, weighs 12 kgs and 270 grams and can burn for 80 hours. Bedekar spent eight days to produce this stick without using a bamboo. It has three different colours red, green and brown and 10 different fragrances.
The commerce graduate started by selling incense sticks 20 years ago. Gradually he started making them and later with the help of books and other literature, he graduated to blending perfumes and experimenting.
Today Bedekar specialises in the popular 6 feet long incense sticks which is very popular in Ganesh and Navratri festivals and other religousoccasions. He exports incense joss sticks to Korea, Mauritius, China and other countries.
According to Bedekar, in his early days he had a tough time. No one was interested in buying incense sticks since the market was flooded with many brands and wholesalers. 8220;I had to start something new, so I began experimenting with the six feet agarbattis for which I am known in the market,8221; he said. Bedekar plans to hold an exhibition of his creations later this year.
