Deepika Padukone talks about the importance of ‘stepping away’ to ‘pause, breathe and re-align’; learn how you can take a break too

Deepika Padukone has been a major proponent of championing the cause of mental health in India. From opening up about her own struggles, to being vocal about de-stigmatising the taboo associated with anxiety and depression, the Bollywood actor leaves no stone unturned when it comes to spreading awareness on the topic.

In an Instagram post, Padukone emphasised on the importance of indulging in acts of self care daily. She said, “for most of us, finding those spaces may not be the most convenient, accessible or may not even exist! And that’s why, whenever I do get the opportunity, I try and make the most of it. It’s where I don’t just survive, I thrive!”

She added, “Stepping away allows me to pause, breathe and re-align… myself and my thoughts.”

Self care month is celebrated from 24 June to 24 July every year.

Indianexpress.com spoke to Dr Roshan Mansukhani, Music Therapist and Counsellor, Music A Holistic Heal, Mumbai to understand some of the ways in which you can disconnect for a while during the day.

“Disconnecting even for 10 minutes a day will help you connect with yourself, which will help pave the road ahead.  Shut your eyes for a minute every hour as body heals itself,” said Mansukhani.

“As and when try to stretch your limbs. back, legs, fingers, hands, blink with a pace for a bit. If you can, work along with some soothing music in the background score. You can also try and for a few minutes and take a walk in the office, “he shared.

Mansukhani suggested talking to your colleagues, divert the conversation to a joke or anything under the sky.

“On your week offs, take some time off even for a drive with family, could be even by the beach or some activity like a park. It is important to have conversations with real people. Yoga helps too,” said the music therapist.

He also suggested cultivating a hobby for yourself as it shall help you look forward to connecting with yourself. “Take time off if you can and consult and talk to someone who won’t judge you. Learn to shred off that baggage,” he said.
