A man in Mississippi, USA, lost 165 kg over four years after he was told by the doctor that he was a “ticking time bomb” and would not live long. WDAM 7 reported that the man weighed approximately 300 kg and underwent drastic weight loss after being motivated to live a longer life.

Beginning his weight loss journey in 2019, Nicholas Craft shed roughly 18 kg in the first month by dieting. Speaking to Fox News Digital, the 42-year-old shared that he was struggling with being overweight since childhood and in high school he weighed 136 kg.

According to Craft, depression led him to overeat, and he could not do much physical activity. This caused body aches, knee pain and shortness of breath. He also could not “get into regular vehicles”. Due to his weight, he stopped going to family events and even travelling.

“The doctor told me if I don’t do something about my weight issue, I was going to end up dying between three to five years,” he told WDAM 7. This is when Craft chose to make a change in his life.

Dr Sanjay Gupta, senior consultant, internal medicine, Paras Hospitals, said, “Obesity can be fatal because it is the mother of diabetes mellitus, hypertension and coronary artery disease. It can lead to the death of a person within a short period of time if not cared for,” he opined. Adding to this, he said obesity can deteriorate heart and lung function as they have to pump a larger amount of blood and oxygen to the body.

Similarly, Azhar Ali Sayed. Holistic Health Coach, Author of “Eat your cake, lose your weight” said, “Overweight and obesity are the fifth leading risk factor for global deaths. Around 2.8 million adults die each year of being overweight or obese. Individuals who are obese with a body mass index (BMI) of more than 30 have almost 50 per cent to 100 per cent increased risk of premature death from all causes, compared to individuals with a healthy weight.”

He further noted that nearly every element of health is negatively impacted by excess weight, especially obesity, from cognition and mood to reproductive and pulmonary function.

However, Craft chose to change his eating habits. He told Fox News Digital that he did not take any specialised weight loss diet, but instead focused on his calorie intake and avoided junk food. “My calorie intake was 1,200 to 1,500 calories per day when I first started,” he said.

Dr Gupta suggests that to lose weight one should avoid a high carbohydrate diet, junk food, cold drinks, and a sedentary lifestyle. “If you are not able to spend the same amount of energy as calories consumed within a day, then the calories will get deposited as fat in your body.” Adding to this, Sayed said, “Modified meal plans, regular physical activity, lifestyle changes, adequate sleep and stress reduction must all be balanced in order to lose weight in the healthiest way possible.”

After the transformation, Craft feels much healthier with improvement in his breathing and is no longer afraid to travel.
