The tiny yellow seeds, fenugreek, or methi, are commonly found in most Indian kitchens. Generally used for tempering, these seeds are immensely beneficial for health. Fenugreek is quite popular among people who want to lose weight. “Methi is the best ingredient to speed up weight loss,” wrote dietitian Mac Singh in his Facebook post.
Since the seeds are hot, they might upset your stomach if consumed in excess amounts. “Be careful if you are a diabetic patient and only consume under the guidance of a medical practitioner,” warned Mac.
Fenugreek seeds provide a plethora of health benefits. Mac shared some of the benefits of the seeds.
Fenugreek contains fiber, minerals, and other nutrients. One tablespoon of seeds provides 20 per cent iron of daily value, 7 per cent manganese, and 5 per cent magnesium.
These seeds may reduce hunger and improve feelings of fullness, which may help avoid overeating and promote weight loss.
The mucilage in fenugreek seeds helps soothe gastrointestinal irritation and coats the stomach and intestinal walls. It is thought to be good for heartburn and acid reflux.
Saponins found in fenugreek aid in lowering the body’s absorption of cholesterol from fatty diets. According to some research, saponins may also help the body produce less cholesterol, particularly LDL or bad cholesterol.
Fenugreek may improve insulin secretion under hyperglycemic settings and raise insulin sensitivity.
Also, these seeds are excellent for PCOS or PCOD, help treat anemia, enhance breast milk production, boost testosterone levels in men, reduce painful periods, and may prevent cancer, said Singh.
“However, more research is needed to confirm these findings, determine the optimal dosage and duration of use, and explore other potential health benefits such as reducing inflammation, improving blood sugar control, and boosting digestive health,” said Ushakiran Sisodia, Head, Diet and Nutrition, Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital.
