Having won what we believe was an important toss, given the up-and-down nature of the deck and with batting only expected to get tougher as the game goes on, South Africa have fallen well short of the total they would have had in mind. Adding to their concerns, they are without Kagiso Rabada, who is out with a rib injury, and others will have to step up in his absence. As for India, it is now up to the batters to build on the good work done by the bowlers. Back in a bit for the start of India's batting effort.

It all began on a promising note through Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton, but neither opener could convert their start, and Temba Bavuma’s stay was a brief one. Tony de Zorzi and Wiaan Mulder then forged a steady stand, but the second session was when India began tightening the screws through Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav. Once both set batters were dismissed, the hosts were able to run through the rest of the lineup, with Tristan Stubbs showing resistance but left stranded as he ran out of partners.

Jasprit Bumrah holds the ball aloft and leads his team off the park. A job well done by India. Having lost the toss and considering the start South Africa got off to, the hosts will be quite pleased with how it has all panned out. South Africa will be disappointed. After being 57/0 at one stage and later 114/3, they have been rolled over for 159. It was a tale of starts squandered by the Proteas batters.

Keshav Maharaj tries to jam the bat down, but his head falls over in the process, and he misses connecting. The ball beats the inside edge and strikes on the boot. A big appeal for LBW in unison from the Indians, and the umpire, Rod Tucker, takes all his time before raising his finger up. Maharaj cannot review it as the Proteas have run out of reviews already, and it hardly would have mattered as well. Things did not get any easier for the Proteas as Mohammed Siraj, after struggling for rhythm in the morning, returned strongly and made full use of reverse swing to strike twice. And then, just before the Tea interval, Axar Patel struck to dent the Proteas further. Amid the collapse, Tristan Stubbs has held his end well despite wickets falling around him. It has not been an easy wicket to bat on with the inconsistent bounce and the odd ball turning, but the story of the innings so far has been South African batters getting starts without going on to make anything substantial.

A successful session for India! While the morning session was fairly even, the afternoon belonged entirely to the hosts. After a promising start, it has all fallen apart for South Africa, who could score only 49 runs in 25 overs and lost 5 wickets in the second session as India tightened the screws. Shubman Gill began with Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav after the break, and the pair struck the right chords immediately. Both Tony de Zorzi and Wiaan Mulder had trouble picking Kuldeep from the hand in the morning session, and those issues continued in the afternoon. In trying to counter him, both batters had been premeditating, and that approach led to Mulder’s downfall as he fell playing a shot he could have avoided, while Tony was undone by Bumrah.

Corbin Bosch draws the front foot out and looks to block, but the ball keeps sliding in and beats the inside edge and raps on the front pad. A huge appeal for LBW and the finger is raised. Since South Africa have extinguished all their reviews, Corbin Bosch will have to walk back. His struggling stay comes to an end at 3 (23) and South Africa are 154/8. And that will be TEA on Day 1!

By the time his bat can meet the ball, the ball smashes his front pad. A big, confident appeal for LBW and up goes the finger. Kyle Verreynne takes the review after a brief chat with Stubbs, but this looks more in hope than anything else. UltraEdge confirms that the ball hit the pad first and the Ball Tracking comes up with three reds with the ball projected to hit the middle stump. The on-field decision is upheld. The Proteas have no reviews left now. Kyle Verreynne departs on 16 (36), and another blossoming partnership has been cut short as South Africa are 146/6 down now.

Just 21 runs have come since the session started and the Proteas have lost 2 big wickets as well. Kuldeep and Bumrah have been running the show all day, and they've just refused to let South Africa breathe. Every time a partnership looked like it might take off, one of these two has stepped up and snuffed it out. That's why the Proteas have been stuck in neutral for most of the day. Apart from that opening hour when Markram and Rickelton were cruising, South Africa just haven't been able to string anything together or build any real momentum​​​​​. This particular partnership becomes of paramount importance for the tourists, whereas India would aim to get a couple more back in the hut to gain complete control of the game.

Welcome back for the post-Lunch session of the first day of this first Test. The umpires and players punctually make their way out to the middle. ... DAY 1, SECOND SESSION ...

Well then, the first session of this opening Test has flown by. This sketchy bounce is going to be a key storyline as the game unfolds. Apart from Bumrah and Kuldeep, who've been absolutely dialled in, the rest of the Indian attack has been average to be very fair. For South Africa, it's simple when they walk back out. This post-Lunch period is prime batting time, everyone knows it. Tony de Zorzi and Mulder need to cash in and milk this partnership for everything it's worth. The longer they bat together, the more India will start sweating with the kind of batting depth the Proteas have at their disposal. It is all set up for another competitive session of cricket. Enter de Zorzi and Mulder. These two dug in deep, absorbed the pressure, and somehow found a way to negotiate that unpredictable bounce and turn. Crisis was averted, but there was always a scare of the fourth one falling with Kuldeep and Jadeja tirelessly aiming at the stumps, and creating those half chances. However, both batters coasted their side safely till the end of the session.

The runs were flowing at a fair clip from one end, but Bumrah bowled relentlessly in his extended opening spell. Seven overs straight of just pure intensity. And boy did it pay off. He conjured up a couple of absolute jaffas, ripping out both openers in back-to-back overs. Kuldeep then got in on the action, getting just enough turn and grip and sending the Proteas skipper packing. Just like that, South Africa went from cruising at 57 without loss to wobbling badly at 71/3.

South Africa won the toss and decided to have a crack at this spicy deck first up. The pitch was doing all sorts - some balls spitting up, others dying through - proper lottery stuff. But Markram and Rickelton weren't fazed. They battened down the hatches for that nervy opening phase and came through unscathed. Markram played it tight early doors while Rickelton looked silky smooth, middling everything. Siraj was all over the place in his opening burst, so rusty that Gill had no choice but to throw the spinners on way earlier than planned.

A riveting morning session of cricket has perfectly set the tone for the series ahead. This is exactly the kind of cricket we're in for throughout the series. Properly balanced stuff. Over 100 runs on the board on a track that's actually pretty good for batting, but the bowlers aren't being shut out either. That variable bounce has given the quicks something to work with, and the spinners have found just enough bite to stay interested. Something for everyone out there, actually. The opening exchanges were won by the Proteas openers, but the second half, by and large, belonged to the hosts, bringing the balance into the contest.

A decent crowd in at the moment, but we are hearing that it is expected to be a sell-out, with more fans likely to make their way in as the day goes on. Before we get underway, the two teams line up for the national anthems. It will be South Africa's national anthem first, followed by that of India.

PITCH REPORT - Dinesh Karthik notes that it is around 21 degrees at the moment, with a maximum of 27 expected later in the day. Shaun Pollock adds that this is not a red-soil wicket, which will come as some relief for South Africa. Shaun further says that the surface looks to be holding together quite well, with enough grass covering to offer movement on Day 1. Karthik points out a lot of dry patches in the centre of the wicket. He expects a little bit of turn later in the match and also anticipates some reverse swing once the ball gets older.

The captain of India, Shubman Gill, cheekily says that the only toss he will win is hopefully in the WTC final. Adds that it looks like a good surface and details that historically, there's a bit for the pacers in it. Says that the bunch is very hungry and this Test series is very crucial for them in terms of preparations and gaining momentum. Reckons that there will be some turn as the game goes on. On the team combination, Gill informs that Rishabh Pant comes back in the side in place of Nitish Kumar Reddy when they last played. Axar Patel is also back in the side, he concludes.

The captain of South Africa, Temba Bavuma, says the team needs to carry on the momentum from the Pakistan series. Adds that they have prepared as well as they can and it is about turning up for the challenge. Shares that there is real excitement in the group because playing in India is always an eye-opening experience and not every day you get to play in front of a big crowd. States that this is his first Test since the WTC final, and he hopes nothing changes from a performance point of view. Assessing the conditions, he mentions that the surface looks on the drier side with not much grass. Further says that it is a typical Indian wicket where runs on the board in the first innings will be key. He informs that Kagiso Rabada misses out due to a rib injury.

It was a trial by spin for South Africa in Pakistan, but given how producing rank turners against New Zealand last year exposed India’s own frailties against spin, the hosts will be wary of going down that route again. Head coach Shukri Conrad has even compared the challenge of facing India in India to the magnitude of their WTC final win earlier this year, showing how highly the visitors rate this contest. Their squad features eight players yet to play a Test in India, but they arrive with confidence after a convincing series-levelling win in Pakistan. The Proteas also welcome back their inspirational captain, Temba Bavuma, returning from a calf injury, who struck a fifty in South Africa A’s monumental chase of 417 last week. Starting with India, their last Test assignment at home ended in a 2-0 win over West Indies, but a far tougher challenge awaits against the reigning Test champions. Rishabh Pant returns after fracturing his right foot in July, and during his absence, Dhruv Jurel had taken over as wicketkeeper-batter. Given Jurel’s recent form with consecutive centuries for India A against South Africa A, he is likely to keep his place in the XI and play purely as a batter. Shubman Gill mentioned in the pre-match press conference that India are still weighing up their balance and will decide between an extra all-rounder or an additional spinner, with Kuldeep Yadav’s selection likely hinging on that call.

The Freedom Trophy has its symbolic value as well, with the trophy named in memory of Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, two towering figures who shaped the histories of their respective nations. It all kicks off here in Kolkata at the iconic Eden Gardens, with Test cricket returning to the City of Joy after 2019. The previous Test series between these sides in South Africa ended in a draw, while the one before that, also in South Africa, was won by the Proteas, who remain the current holders of the Freedom Trophy.

Well then, just 30 runs separate both sides at the moment, which clearly tells that both sides have punched hard after being pushed back. From 153/4, India slipped down to 189/9 with Shubman Gill struggling through a neck spasm and he couldn't come out to bat. The Proteas would be delighted with the way they performed with the ball, and would like to translate that into their second batting stint and set a huge score for India to chase. But clearly, it all depends on how they negotiate Bumrah, and especially against the spin quartet of the hosts. The pitch, as it deteriorates further, will get increasingly difficult to bat on. It's been a similar kind of template, looking at the scorecards of both sides. Batters have got the starts, have got into their 20s and 30s, but extending their scores into something substantial has been a big challenge, especially against the old ball, which has got a good grip and turn. Batting hasn't been easy, and 39 has been the highest individual score in this game so far, by KL Rahul. He was the one who really looked organised up front, while Pant flickered through a breezy cameo, so did Jadeja. But as has been the case, nobody could carry on for long.

19 wickets have fallen across both innings, that too, in a day and a half. A top-class bowling performance from the Proteas, as they haven't allowed India to extend the lead as much as the hosts would have wanted. Since Simon Harmer's introduction into the attack, India kept losing wickets at regular intervals as he badly dented through the Indian middle order, whereas Marco Jansen, who was a bit all over the place in his opening spell, also chipped in late with a 3-fer.

From the home side’s perspective, Axar Patel has to shoulder the responsibility here, and he might look to target Marco Jansen rather than Simon Harmer, who is in the middle of a very good spell. As for the Proteas, it is about keeping things simple, consistently keeping the stumps in play and staying alert in the field, because with a tailender around, a run-out chance is never far away. That, however, did not deter Pant, who continued to put pressure back on the bowlers. He threatened to eat into the deficit briskly, but Corbin Bosch cut short his stay. The first hour saw the game meander, with only 38 runs scored in 14 overs. The pace of the contest changed drastically with the introduction of Simon Harmer in the next hour. First, he removed Washington Sundar with his second ball, and later in the same over, Shubman Gill, after unleashing a slog sweep, experienced a neck spasm and subsequently walked off. In walked Rishabh Pant, who batted in his usual free-flowing manner. After toiling without much luck and bowling unchanged for more than an hour, Keshav Maharaj finally got his reward by removing KL Rahul.

SESSION SUMMARY - 25 overs, 101 runs and 3 wickets. A fascinating session of Test cricket. The first hour was a slow burn, but the next felt like watching two heavyweight boxers trading punches. The start to the day was watchful from KL Rahul and Washington Sundar, but to be fair, Marco Jansen, who operated from one end, did not test the Indian pair enough upfront. Only TWO balls in his five-over spell were on track to hit the stumps, which is far too few on a surface where the bounce has been inconsistent.

DRINKS BREAK. After a watchful start in the first half an hour, runs have just started to come at a decent clip for India, but still, there hasn't been any urgency. Both KL Rahul and Sundar have got the starts and are looking well-settled at the crease, without much trouble. Or shall we say, the bowling hasn't been that consistent from the Proteas so far. Marco Jansen completed his fresh spell, but didn't target the stumps much, and these two were happy to leave anything offered outside off. Sure, the runs haven't flowed, but there is a need to be a bit more on the stumps and make the batters play. All set for the action to commence on Day 2. It is a crisp Saturday morning in Kolkata, with the crowd gradually building up. Usually, former greats of the sport ring the bell at Eden Gardens to mark the start of play, but it is one of the modern-day greats this time, Kagiso Rabada, who does the honours today. The Proteas spread out of the huddle and take their respective fielding positions. PITCH REPORT - Dinesh Karthik is pitchside and notes that 11 wickets fell on Day 1, with eight of them going to the pacers, and only 196 runs scored in total. He calls it a clear day for the bowlers. Shaun Pollock adds that the variable bounce is a direct result of the prevalent cracks on the surface. Whether the ball keeps low or shoots up depends on which side of the crack it lands on. He expects these cracks to have a major role as the match progresses, with variable bounce continuing to challenge the batters. The pitch has not worn much yet, but Pollock expects it to crumble further as the game goes on. The bowlers, he says, will continue to have plenty to work with on this surface. Karthik believes that the South African bowlers will have to keep the stumps in play, something Jasprit Bumrah did for India.

The positive for India was that they managed to hold on without further damage, even as Keshav Maharaj extracted sharp turn and the trio of Jansen, Mulder and Corbin Bosch kept hitting relentless lengths. The scoring rate crawled, but for that moment, preservation mattered more than tempo. Only 75 overs were possible as fading light brought an early close, but India will return on Day 2 with the intent to push the scoring along, and they will have a fuller, even louder Eden Gardens crowd rallying behind them on the weekend. It's shaping up to be another fascinating day of Test cricket.

The variable bounce and turn that plagued the first day isn't going away. If anything, it might get trickier as the pitch wears. Both teams will be eyeing how much the spinners come into play as the game progresses. Keshav Maharaj will be crucial for South Africa if they're going to claw their way back, while Harmer arrives in Kolkata after an impressive bowling stint in Lahore last month that spun South Africa to a series-levelling win over Pakistan. Kuldeep has already shown he's a handful on this surface, with India boasting a threatening spin quartet.

South Africa's bowlers, particularly the pace trio, showed glimpses of what they're capable of in that brief evening spell. For India, the morning session will be crucial. The opening day well and truly belonged to the bowlers, with as many as 11 wickets falling in the entire day, and only 196 runs scored in total. India arrive this morning whilst being ahead, but the job is far from finished. Day 1 was all about the hosts, who skittled out South Africa for a well-below-par total, or, to put it simply, the Proteas got well and truly Bumrah-ed. The surface kept throwing up variable bounce and turn, the pressure never eased, and the South African batters just couldn’t find a way to withstand the intensity.

... DAY 2, FIRST SESSION ...

Got to give credit where it's due to the South African bowlers. Sure, they only got one wicket, but they made run-scoring a proper grind. With the light fading and the ball doing a bit, they kept things tight and when the spinners were brought on, the scoring was further clamped down before the umpires felt it wasn't safe to play under deteriorating lights. Okay then, the absorbing first day of this opening Test of the Freedom Trophy has flown by. India holds the dominance right now, winning two sessions, but cricket is all about sustaining the momentum. The Proteas will aim to get quick wickets when they come afresh to bowl on the second day. They need wickets in clusters as 159 is, on any pitch, a bit too under par. For the Indians, it is all about consolidating and forming partnerships, which the Saffas clearly lacked. India's Mohammed Siraj is in for a chat with the broadcasters. He says the new ball was coming nicely onto the bat with not a lot of swing on offer, but once the ball got older, it stayed low, and they looked to attack the stumps. Mentions that he found reverse swing, which made the stump-to-stump line very effective, bringing LBW, bowled, and even the catching option at mid-wicket into play. Shares that Shubman Gill was going to take him out of the attack, but he requested one more over and got a couple of wickets in that over. States that from one end, the ball kept low, and he feels the pacers are going to enjoy bowling from that end throughout the match. Siraj feels his side is in a good position, considering the way they pulled things back after the strong start from Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton, and with only one wicket down, he believes they are slightly ahead in the game.

The third session started, and South Africa's resistance lasted all of three overs. Bumrah and Co. mopped up the tail in no time, leaving Stubbs high and dry as the Proteas folded for just 159. Bumrah grabbed his 16th five-wicket haul in Tests, while Siraj and Kuldeep picked up two apiece. When India came out to bat, Jaiswal looked all kinds of uncomfortable against the new ball. KL Rahul, though, was rock solid at the other end and played a few delightful strokes as well. Just as Jaiswal was finding his feet and starting to look more comfortable, Jansen struck and sent him packing. India threw a curveball by sending Sundar in at three, and he combined with Rahul to see off the rest of the day without any more damage.

India completely turned the screws in the second session and South Africa crumbled under the pressure. After a fairly even morning, the afternoon was an absolute nightmare for the tourists. Just 49 runs off 25 overs while losing 5 wickets tells you everything. Bumrah and Kuldeep picked up where they left off, and the South African batters just couldn't figure them out. Tony de Zorzi and Mulder, who looked steady in a blossoming partnership, eventually perished against controlled bowling. Then Siraj, who was all over the shop early on, found his groove with some reverse swing and grabbed a couple to his name as well. Axar chipped in just before tea to twist the knife further. Only Stubbs displayed any real fight, holding firm while wickets tumbled around him.

The opening session delivered exactly what this series promised - proper Test cricket with something in it for everyone. After winning the toss, South Africa's openers navigated the tricky early period smartly, with Rickelton looking especially fluent, before Bumrah stepped up massively. Seven overs of relentless pressure yielded two absolute beauties that removed both openers, and Kuldeep quickly made it three. From 57 without loss to 71 for 3, South Africa looked in trouble, but de Zorzi and Mulder dug in, weathering the variable bounce to drag their side to a respectable score of 105 by Lunch.

The umpires converge to have a chat once again, and they feel that the artificial light has overpowered the natural light now. Simon Harmer was right on his bowling mark and was keen to continue, but the umps pulled the plug on what was a day dominated by the bowlers. As many as 11 wickets fell and only 196 runs were scored. Overall, the hosts would be quite pleased with the way they dominated the whole day, mainly through their bowling effort. The Proteas, on the other hand, might surely feel that they were underwhelming on a pitch that was not THAT bad to bat on. On the positive side, though, they will be pleased with the way they operated with the new ball.

Ravindra Jadeja was the wrecking ball India needed. He ripped through South Africa's top and middle order with surgical precision, getting solid backup from Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel. Just as the Bavuma-Bosch partnership was starting to look dangerous, Bumrah stepped up to break it, and Siraj mopped up the tail efficiently. India will back themselves to chase this down, but there's a catch. They're without Shubman Gill, who's been ruled out of the Test with that neck spasm. So they're essentially playing with 10 batters. That changes the equation significantly. Also, the highest successful chase at Eden Gardens is 117, which was chased by India against South Africa, way back in 2004. They need 124 runs, which is slightly more than that figure, and they will surely fancy their chances. The Proteas will take heart from their first inning bowling display, where, without the talisman, Kagiso Rabada, they did extremely well to restrict India to 189. With the pitch turning into a landmine, this is going to be a cracker of a chase with a lot of action. Back in a bit with India's response.

The experts said it from the start - whoever respects this pitch, stays patient, and nails the basics will succeed. Temba Bavuma took that advice to heart. He might be small in stature, but his half-century was absolutely massive in digging South Africa out of a hole. Solid defence, composure under pressure, and quality skill. Sounds like textbook cliches, but that's precisely what the Proteas needed from their overnight batter and skipper, and he delivered. Credit to Corbin Bosch as well. He stood tall against prodigious spin and bounce and formed a crucial 44-run partnership with his skipper before eventually perishing.

A massively pleasing batting stint from South Africa through the main architect, Temba Bavuma. From being in tatters on 93/7 at the end of Day 2, they had their backs against the wall coming into the third day. But the skipper stepped up from the front and worked valiantly to get South Africa to a total which is worth fighting for on this track. India, on the other hand, might feel that they gave a few easy singles early in the day, though they kept creating half chances here and there.

PITCH REPORT - Former Indian keeper Dinesh Karthik and South African legend Shaun Pollock are out having a look at the Day 3 pitch at Eden Gardens. Pollock says the game has completely transformed. Says that Day 1 was all about the seamers and unpredictable bounce, but now it has become spinner-friendly with the amount of turn and bounce they are extracting. Notes that the wrist spinners are getting that bounce, but it is the finger spinners who are hitting a steep trajectory that's rapping batters on the gloves and zipping past the outside edge. He's backing more of the same today, possibly worse. Details that the good length and full length areas have turned crusty, meaning the spinners will be licking their lips. He references that Bumrah ripper from around the wicket that caught Rickelton flush on the ribs. On the reason for that, he further explains that the cracks around the good length area outside off to a left-hander are intersecting, and when the ball hits those intersections, it just detonates off the deck. Pollock is convinced there's loads in this for the spinners and batting will only get tougher. DK closes by pointing out that 11 wickets fell on Day 1, 15 on Day 2, and the big question now is how many will go down today.

JUST IN - The BCCI have released a medical update on Shubman Gill. The statement confirms that the Indian skipper was taken to the hospital for examination yesterday after the end of the day’s play. He is currently under observation and will take no further part in this game. Gill will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team.

The mind goes back to the 2024 Mumbai Test between India and New Zealand. In reply to 235 from the Kiwis, the home side managed to secure a narrow 28-run lead. India were then set 147 to chase in the fourth innings on a similar track, but New Zealand successfully defended it and won by 25 runs. This game seems to be heading down a similar path. Settle in. A huge first hour awaits.

India, meanwhile, will be eager to snare the three remaining wickets quickly to keep the target within reach. Ravindra Jadeja spun a web around the visitors last evening and will once again be the heartbeat of India’s charge with his accuracy and relentless stump-to-stump pressure. Shubman Gill’s overnight hospital admission for the neck spasm he suffered while batting yesterday is a setback, and his return appears unlikely. That will leave the home side a batter short and place added responsibility on the rest of the batting unit when they eventually walk out to chase.

South Africa begin the day with a lead of 63 and the chance to stretch it into something far more substantial. Temba Bavuma’s calm presence has been the glue so far, but what unfolds around him now could define the Test. Will someone take the aggressive route and land the first blow, or will the visitors attempt to grind out every run on a surface that continues to plot against batters? If they can push the score beyond 120, they will fancy their bowlers to take it from there.

On a track where you are never really set as a batter and any ball could have your name written on it, you have to try to be positive but smart in the options you select. Come Day 3, it could well be Corbin Bosch playing that aggressive role in the morning for South Africa, who currently hold a lead of 63 runs. If it comes off, the tourists could very well push past 100 and beyond. The effect of the roller might mean conditions are a touch easier for the first few overs. India's Axar Patel is up for a quick chat with Ravi Shastri. On being asked about how the pitch is playing, Axar mentions that it looks even from one end, but is doing a lot from the other end, detailing that it is turning and bouncing. Adds that on such a wicket, you need to attack the stumps and bowl with a positive mindset. Also points out that when you know there is a lot of help for the bowlers, you can get carried away and do a lot more to get a wicket. But stresses on keeping it simple because the batters are already finding it tricky to score and are bound to make mistakes. On being asked about what could be a good total, he reckons 125 would be an easy chase for them, looking at this track.

In reply, South Africa had a few overs to negotiate before the Tea break, but Ryan Rickelton could not see it through. Come the third session, Ravindra Jadeja tightened the screws on the visitors. On a challenging track with turn and bounce, it is those balls that go straight that plant the seed of doubt in the batter’s mind, and Ravindra Jadeja ran through the Proteas’ top and middle order, relentlessly asking all kinds of questions. Temba Bavuma held firm in the face of wickets falling around him and, towards the fag end, first Kyle Verreynne and then Marco Jansen tried to counterattack. While a couple of shots came off for Jansen, he could not carry on for long.

Trailing by 122 runs at the start of the day, KL Rahul and Washington Sundar were watchful in their approach. South Africa did not quite target the stumps enough early on, but the turnaround started for them with the introduction of Simon Harmer, who ended up with four wickets. The Proteas kept chipping away at the wickets and India's batting effort mirrored that of their opponents, with several batters getting starts but nothing of real substance. Shubman Gill walked off after feeling a twinge in his neck and could not return. The hosts ended with a lead of 30 and there was not much to separate the two sides.

The light meter is out and the umpires feel that the light is not good enough to continue. That will be STUMPS for Day 2. An eventful third session with 6 wickets falling in 28.2 overs and 75 runs scored caps off an engrossing day of Test cricket. 15 wickets fell on the day, with the surface showing drastic deterioration compared to Day 1. Who would have thought we would end up here, considering the first hour was all serene before the game started to pick up pace, and now we are staring at a potential Day 3 finish.
