Stress is inevitable. It stems from moving away from comfort zones, especially at workplaces where we are challenged in multiple ways. Sometimes, the discomfort leaves us drained and makes us question our choices.

However, rapper Badshah believes stress is “part of the journey” if one loves their job. When asked about managing stress by an influencer  — who goes by the username khann_journey during a ‘What do you do for a living’ video segment, Badshah replied, “I don’t think it’s stressful at all, if you love your job, it becomes part of the journey… In my job, the uniqueness is our story…I don’t think anything is stressful…”

Does stress really contribute to both professional and personal growth?

According to Dr Arpita Kohli, a psychologist and counsellor at PSRI Hospital, Delhi, stress plays a role in both professional and personal growth; however, its contribution to productivity depends on how it’s managed.

“A small amount of stress, often called ‘positive stress’ or eustress, can act as a motivator. It pushes people to meet deadlines, prepare better, and challenge themselves to improve,” added Dr Kohli.

The psychologist added that mild stress can encourage problem-solving and resilience in personal life. However, excessive or prolonged stress can become harmful. It can affect mental health, lower productivity, and even lead to physical problems like high blood pressure or poor sleep. So, while stress in moderation can be beneficial, it should never reach a level that harms one’s well-being.

Is it okay to normalise stress, as Badhshah emphasised?

Badshah’s perspective highlights an important truth: when people love their work, they often accept stress as part of the process, said Dr Kohli. She added that passion can make challenges feel more meaningful, and the satisfaction of overcoming stress can bring fulfilment.

However, from a medical perspective, it is essential to draw a line. “Even if someone loves their job, chronic stress should not be ignored. The body and mind need time to rest and recover. Stress may be part of the journey, but it can have a lasting impact on health without proper balance. Loving your work should never mean normalising harmful stress levels,” stressed the psychologist.

Drawing boundaries

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial, even for those who enjoy their work. Dr Kohli recommended that setting clear boundaries between work and personal time is essential to help prevent burnout. Second, regular physical activity, such as walking, yoga, or gym workouts, helps the body release tension. Third, maintaining good sleep hygiene is essential because proper rest restores the brain and body. Fourth, making time for hobbies, family, and social connections creates emotional support outside work. Lastly, practising mindfulness or relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or meditation, can reduce the impact of stress.

“Loving your job is wonderful, but taking care of your health ensures you can continue enjoying it for years,” concluded the psychologist.
