South Africa not only made India toil through 151.1 overs, but also took valuable time out of the game. With the hosts trailing in the series, the onus is firmly on them to force a result here in Guwahati. The Proteas have batted for nearly two full days, and it will take something special for India to swing this Test in their favour. Play can be extended by half an hour to make up overs, but given how quickly the light fades in Guwahati, it is unlikely we will get more than 30 minutes beyond the scheduled close. End of a solid batting effort from South Africa. First innings totals are always crucial and this is a job well done from the Proteas. The story of their top six batters was them getting starts but converting and at 246/6, they were in danger of being folded under 300. The lower order came to the rescue with the last 4 wickets adding 243 runs. Senuran Muthusamy led the charge with a superb maiden Test ton, stitching together valuable stands that made India grind hard. Marco Jansen made his intentions clear from the moment he walked in, shifting the tempo straightaway. Jansen kept going after Muthusamy perished and found an able ally in Maharaj, but he could not get to his hundred.

It was pretty much a chanceless partnership until an error by Verreynne led to his downfall. Marco Jansen's arrival saw the scoring rate pick up with the lanky speedster using his long levers to find the fence. Muthusamy got in on the act soon after and brought up his maiden Test ton. As the partnership grew, the Indian shoulders began to drop, and they just went through the motions for the remainder of the session. The Proteas have so far made the most of the good batting conditions and will be hungry for more when they return after the break, while India will have to find a way to take the remaining 3 wickets. Join us back at 2 pm IST (8.30 am GMT) for the post-Lunch session.

SESSION SUMMARY - 26 overs, 112 runs and 1 wicket. A dominant session for South Africa and an equally frustrating one for India. From being 246/6, this has been an extraordinary effort from the Proteas. Senuran Muthusamy and Kyle Verreynne carried on the good work for the touring side after the break. Just as was the case in the morning, they were happy to not try anything fancy and knuckled down. Not taking anything away from the Proteas pair, but the Indian spinners bowled a bit too fast and did not vary their speeds enough to challenge the batters.

PITCH REPORT - Shaun Pollock is pitchside and notes that the surface looks noticeably drier today. He mentions that there was some moisture around yesterday, which helped produce movement for the pacers, and it also resulted in more bounce for the spinners in the morning session. He feels this might be a new-ball wicket, so it will be interesting to see what the second new ball does. Deep Dasgupta agrees that the surface has dried out and is starting to get a touch dusty. He points out developing footmarks that could offer a little more for the spinners as the day goes on. That said, he believes it remains a good batting wicket heading into Day 2.

As for India, they will be pleased with their collective effort. Their spinners did the bulk of the work on a surface that settled down as the day progressed, and their discipline shone through with tight lines and fields that forced the visitors to take risks. Looking ahead, with the second new ball less than two overs old, India will turn to Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, who, after a good night’s rest, will be raring to limit the South African total and set the tone early on Day 2. All four of their top-order batters looked to have settled in, with each facing at least 80 balls, but none converted, giving their wickets away after doing the hard work. It was back to the old-fashioned rhythm of Test cricket, where patience, discipline, and attrition took centre stage. India would have been the slightly happier of the two sides at stumps, whereas for South Africa, although they managed to put up 247, it is the wickets column that will sting.

So, as Tristan Stubbs has said, they are a bit disappointed that everyone in the top six got starts, but none could anchor the innings. Tristan Stubbs is in for a chat. He says he is a bit disappointed because everyone in the top six got starts, but none could kick on and make it big. Adds that he enjoys batting at number three. Mentions that the wicket played quite nicely but credits India for bowling well, saying it was not really free-flowing, you felt comfortable, but the scoreboard just was not going anywhere. He acknowledges that Kuldeep beat him in the drift and even jokes that he still can’t believe Kuldeep got him out, and on top of that, KL Rahul (both his teammates in the IPL), took the catch. Tristan stresses that first-innings runs are going to be crucial and hopes they can bat for as long as possible and extend the innings deep into Day 2.

On the other side of the break, Ryan Rickelton fell to Kuldeep Yadav after getting a solid start. South Africa rebuilt the innings through Temba Bavuma and Tristan Stubbs, who joined hands and did a pretty good job by adding 84 runs to the third wicket. Temba Bavuma fell while trying to clear the mid off region, while Tristan Stubbs departed one shy of his fifty. India rested their hopes on the spinners to do the job and Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja didn't disappoint as they claimed four wickets together.

So, the Test match started at a new destination as Guwahati kicked off its Test career. In the absence of Gill, Rishabh Pant became only the second wicket-keeper to lead India after the great MS Dhoni. Indian seamers, after being asked to bowl first, set the tone by bowling well with the new ball but around the 10th over or so, the pitch flattened out, allowing South Africa to grow into the game and start scoring. It was not until the final over before the end of the first session that Jasprit Bumrah crashed Aiden Markram's stumps.

So, it was a good day of cricket, but to highlight it on a big scale, the third session has put India on top as they picked 4 wickets. It was a good wicket to bat on, but a couple of the Proteas batters threw away their wickets. Tony de Zorzi and Senuran Muthusamy joined hands to get things back on track with a 45-run partnership, but Tony fell off the second new ball, at the stroke of Stumps.

With the ball softening as the day has progressed, batting has looked easier, and from South Africa’s perspective, it is now about building on the platform they have laid. As for India, they were a bit too defensive with their fields for the spinners in the morning, but were more attacking in the afternoon. What followed was a period of attritional batting from Temba Bavuma and Tristan Stubbs. Bavuma picked up where he left off in Kolkata, decisive with his footwork and assured in defence, while Stubbs, promoted to number three, showed commendable application against the spinners. Unlike Kolkata, where every ball felt like an event with sharp turn and variable bounce, the surface here has offered slower turn and far more predictability. Even so, take nothing away from the Proteas pair, who have applied themselves superbly so far. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj returned and operated in tandem as Rishabh Pant searched for a breakthrough. The duo got the ball to reverse and tested the South African pair with a stump-to-stump line, but the batters handled that phase with minimal discomfort.

SESSION SUMMARY - 28.1 overs, 74 runs and 1 wicket. A good session for South Africa. It was a session of rebuilding after the two openers perished on either side of the break, and it was a job well done by Tristan Stubbs and Temba Bavuma. The surface has settled down nicely, making it hard work for India’s bowlers, though they will take some encouragement from having kept the scoring rate in check. Aiden Markram looked a bit rusty on his back foot as he edged three times onto the pads, and that determined Rishabh Pant to throw the ball towards Jasprit Bumrah for one final time before the break. The Indian seamers started well, beating the edge numerous times but Ryan Rickelton and Aiden Markram remained calm and took their time to score runs. Reckons the pitch is more consistent with not many cracks in it, and expects to play well in the first two days before the spin comes into play. PITCH REPORT - Deep Dasgupta informs that it is a red soil wicket. Shaun Pollock adds that the track has a substantial grass covering, and he likes what he sees. Shaun says that he much prefers this pitch to the one in Kolkata. Believes that the fast bowlers should get something out of the new ball, especially with the early start and a bit of cloud cover around. Pollock expects some moisture to aid movement in the first hour, which could be challenging for the batters. He feels the captain winning the toss should bat first. Deep agrees, calling it a really good Test-match wicket, and with it being a red soil surface, he expects spin to come into play as the game progresses.

India’s recent struggles against spin have been well documented, with New Zealand exposing those frailties in 2024, and South Africa did the same in Kolkata. With Guwahati being an unknown quantity at the Test level, it only adds to the intrigue and drama surrounding what the 22 yards might have in store. Also remember, with daylight fading earlier in this part of the country, play will begin 30 minutes earlier than usual to maximise good light, with the Tea break taken first, followed by the Lunch interval. Was the pitch too difficult to bat on? Or did the Indian batters just threw their wickets away in the process? The answer is somewhat between those. But the way Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav batted for their 72-run stand for the eighth wicket, it showed that the pitch was still good enough to bat on. It was just about spending more time on the pitch with application, which the Indian middle order failed to do. Their resistance of Kuldeep and Washington lasted for 208 balls before Simon Harmer and Marco Jansen wrapped up the tail. Marco Jansen achieved his fourth Test five-wicket haul and made good use of the bounce he got. Right then, South Africa have the upper hand in this Test and they will aim to take the game far away from India's reach, which has already slipped away. What's happened to India while batting at home, one wonders. They have looked uncomfortable in their own backyard. It was a steady start for India with Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul first seeing off the tricky phase late on Day 2 and then seeing off the early part of Day 3. The home side looked in a decent position at 95/1, but once Jaiswal perished, it all fell apart. First, it was Simon Harmer who dented India, and then, after the Tea break, Marco Jansen piled on the misery for the hosts. It was a procession on either side of the break as India were reduced to 122/7.
